Dividend Aristocrats In Focus Part 25: Brown-Forman

November 29th, 2019
Brown-Forman has a dominant position in its core product categories. Its flagship Jack Daniel’s brand should continue to lead the whiskey industry, with high growth from its smaller whiskey brands and tequila. The emerging markets are also an appealing growth catalyst and of course the dividend growth streak is enviable.

Brown-Forman is a good example of a great business trading at an exceptionally high valuation. If shares were to continue trading at 30+ times earnings, total return potential would be average. However, that is a speculation that we are not comfortable making at this juncture. As such, despite a solid dividend and very strong business, shares do not look particularly compelling for purchase right now.

In 2019, just 57 dividend aristocrats were listed among the Standard & Poor's 500. They can be found in many sectors including healthcare, retail, oil and gas, and construction.

I'm curious as to why you choose to follow Dividend Aristocrats.
Is it for the stability? In which case you might sacrifice growth? (DA has no tech stocks I believe...)
Have you considered that it is purely weighted in US?

Is there a similar index for Global exposure instead of purely in the US?

US mainly becoz I hav brokerage acct for SGX and US which does not need me to trade frequently. If I trade HK, London, African stocks, but custodian and brokerage fees will be too high for normal retail investors like moi.

tried "growth" stocks once, and it was too volatile for one single exposure. remember earlier this yr fb down abt 20% in few days? i simply hav no time to follow news and monitor prices movement daily. and there is another problem, if the growth stock reach target price, do i sell or hold? then need to study the charts, the earnings, business again and again. if sell need to find another place to deploy the money. simply too much work outside of my day job.

until the day i find free and reliable analyst of growth stocks, i will not buy any growth stories.

for exposure to dividend global, i think best is unit trust of dividend stocks. let see if i hav some time to search for such UT or ETF.

Thanks for sharing.
Are you able to circumvent the US 30% tax on dividends? Or does that not bother you?

not dat i know. maybe institutions can. or some robos i heard can help u claim back some tax.

i personally offset withholding tax thru lower broker commission, no platform custodian fees and larger margin of safety.
eg if i want 4% current DY, i will wait price drop until abt 5%
sometime i will just buy even at 4% if i am confident dat it will reach 5% or more in future, on top of capital gains.

NOV to lay off employees, suspend operations at Galena Park facility
December 2, 2019
The facility closure and layoffs are the latest woes for the company. Like other oil field services companies, NOV has been stung by the ongoing shale slump where $50 per barrel crude oil has resulted in lower drilling and completion activity in the United States and Canada.

NOV reported an $5.4 billion loss during the second quarter followed by a $244 million loss during the third quarter. Earlier this year, the company enacted a voluntary early retirement plan that was designed to save $7 million. Executives estimate they can save $160 million a year by restructuring its workforce over the next year.
