Microsoft Wins $22 Billion Army Contract For Augmented Reality Headsets
Mar 31, 2021

The contract could be worth up to $21.9 billion over ten years, according to Microsoft. The deal would build on a $480 million contract the Army struck with Microsoft in 2018, securing thousands of prototypes for the headset technology. The latest contract would move the project into a production phase, supplying more than 120,000 units of the technology to soldiers in the Close Combat Force. Shares of Microsoft were up roughly 1.7% to $235.77 at market close on Wednesday.

Japan and US aim for chip supply chain deal in April summit
April 2, 2021

The two leaders are expected to confirm the importance of creating a decentralized supply network. They will aim to establish a system in which production does not rely on specific regions such as Taiwan, where geopolitical risks are high, and China, where conflicts with the U.S. are deepening.

The U.S. side may also seek cooperation from Japan in terms of export restrictions to China. The U.S. tightened export restrictions on Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei during the administration of former president Donald Trump. Unlike the U.S., Japan currently does not impose restrictions on exports to China.

The semiconductor shortage became apparent in the latter part of 2020, after carmakers had trimmed their semiconductor orders in anticipation of a decrease in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dividend Aristocrats In Focus: Kimberly-Clark
Updated on April 1st, 2021

Given the strong yield, 49-year history of dividend increases and moderate growth expectations, we rate the stock a hold for dividend growth investors. But the stock is not a buy for new investment right now due to the high valuation.

Kimberly-Clark is a high-quality company with a diverse portfolio of strong brands. It has positive growth prospects moving forward, and it is an extremely reliable dividend stock. Future earnings growth will be highlighted by emerging markets, cost reductions, and share repurchases.

Kimberly-Clark has increased its dividend for 49 years in a row, and currently has a dividend yield of 3.3%. It therefore meets our definition of a blue-chip stock, and it should continue to deliver steady dividend increases each year.

Flight to Value Stocks Hits ESG Funds
April 2, 2021

Growth stocks propelled the outperformance of many environmental, social and governance (ESG) funds in recent years. But those same types of stocks now are turning into potential headwinds for the funds, as investors pivot more to stocks the market sees as undervalued.

ESG funds decide what companies to invest in based on more than earnings and balance sheets. They look at things like carbon-dioxide emissions and racial and gender diversity in the workforce.
hopefully is not another fad.

Asian Open: Strong data sends Wall Street soaring
April 6, 2021

US data for April continued to smash expectations, lifting the S&P 500 and Dow Jones to fresh record highs. The ISM services index jumped to a record high in March, with new orders following suit with its own record high of 67.2 and employment rising to 57.2, its highest level since May 2019. Prices paid rose to 74.0, which is its most inflationary level since July 2008.

This follows on from a strong set of business sentiment and employment data heading into Easter. On Thursday, ISM manufacturing rose to a 37 year high of 64.7, up from 60.8. New orders were the highest since 2004 and the employment component also rose to a 3-year high. And on Friday Nonfarm payrolls blew past expectations and added 916k jobs versus 647k expected, up from 468k previously (which was itself upwardly revised from 379k).

Asian Open: US job openings hit 2 year high, sterling ‘pounded’
April 7, 2021

US jobs openings hit a two-year high in February, rising to 7.4 million compared with 6.9 million in January. The combination of stronger demand thanks to covid vaccinations and government stimulus increased the need for more workers, making this employment print the latest in a growing line of strong data sets for the US this month so far.

On vaccinations, Biden increased his target for all American adults to be eligible for the jab by 19th April and says over 80% of teachers and school staff had received at least one shot already. And (whilst we’re on a roll) the IMF have forecast global growth to hit 6% this year, a level not seen since the 1970s, all thanks to unprecedented public spending!

Yet despite all of the positivity in the air, Wall Street failed to push materially higher. The S&P 500 made a minor intraday record high yet closed with a very small indecision candle just off its highs, which will no doubt make some bulls nervous. But, of course, it takes more than one small candle to ruin a trend. The Dow Jones printed a small, bearish inside day just off its own record high and the Nasdaq 100 closed with a small bearish pinbar.

Asian Open: Fed remain optimistically patient, ASX 200 to break higher?
April 8, 2021

The FOMC retained their upbeat tone on the US economy in the minutes of their meeting. And this has since been backed up by a slew of strong data since their March meeting, including nonfarm payroll, job openings and surging PMI’s (with services PMI at a new record). This all points to a strong Q1 GDP print, which also ties in with the IMF’s (International Monetary Fund’s) expectation for the US to average 6.4% growth this year.

Yet despite all of this, the Fed still maintained their patient approach and that inflation will rise temporarily and the coronavirus remains a threat. It will also take “some time” to make substantial progress towards their 2%inflation and full employment targets. This remains at odds with markets which are now pricing in a first hike late 2022, although some members do see a case for raising rates sooner than others.
