at your first port of landing in US, you need to take your bags, clear immigration and then hand them back to the airline agent for the onward journey (ex. Atlanta to nashville), once you hand over the luggage, you are free to leave the airport for exploration right?

have a 9 hour layover in atlanta, want to hand over the luggage for the onward journey and explore downtown atlanta a bit

Hi, i am planning a family roadtrip to San Francisco to Los Angeles in Nov 2023.

When i googled car rental from SFO to LAX for a 18 day trip(pick up 9am,drop off 3pm), a mitsubishi mirage costs S$1800.

Is this reasonable? I was of the impression car rental in US is pretty cheap but am surprised it is so expensive. I am planning to rent SUV but cheapest car is almost S$2K. Not sure if I am searching correctly or there is a smarter way of checking.

Grateful for any advice. TIA

I previously searched this thread and found that people recommended to rent with alamo via Uscarhire (3rd party agency).

I paid SGD1550 for the following for my road trip in mid April to early May this year :
Duration: 18 days
Pickup:San Francisco union square
Return: SFO airport
Car make: Toyota Camry
All required insurance included (full damage waiver and Supplementary Liability insurance)

Thanks for sharing. Maybe pickup from airport more ex. I'd play around with pick up location.

Do you feel safe parking car in SF? I was reading there were quite a no. of cars being broken in pretty blatantly in daylight.

My wife and i saw plenty of reports about car break-in.

So.. We chose not to drive within SF itself. We just use uber to get around in SF.

We only collected our car when leaving SF for Yosemite.

In retrospect, I think it is actually ok.
- Don't leave your bags and valuables visible at the front or back seats. Keep everything in the boot (just like driving in Malaysia - we practise this for our entire US trip)
- Saw this advice from tripadvisor forums: if u want to be extra safe, get a sedan instead of SUV / hatchback. Your bags and luggage may be visible and "exposed" in a hatchback or SUV at the back window. Whereas a sedan can fully conceal your belongings in the boot.

Check with the baggage agent when you drop your bags, but the answer is almost certainly yes, you should be fine. Have fun in Atlanta!

Oh, awesome! You'll love it, I guarantee.

Unfortunately yeah, that's plausible. Car rentals exploded in price post-Covid, and if anything $70 USD/day for a rental (plus the one-way surcharge) actually looks pretty good. When I price up the same rental I get a price that looks like a phone number.

Someone also suggested not picking your rental car up until you're ready to leave SF, and that's a great idea. You really don't need (or want!) a car to get around SF - public transport will get you to nine out of ten places you might want to go. Heck, you might not even want one in LA: public transport in LA is famously bad, but Uber/Lyft are perfectly fine, and driving around LA is a giant pain in the butt.

The smart move is to pick up the car right when you leave SF, and drop it as soon as you get to LA.

Sadly, the answer is "carparks are fine, but don't park your car on the street in San Francisco". I live near SF, I drive into town once a week or so, and I've never had a problem - but I always park in a carpark, never on the street.

And getting a sedan instead of a hatchback or an SUV is a great idea. I never leave anything visible in the cabin - everything always stays in the trunk, so there's no temptation for someone to smash-and-grab.

U can try websites like kayak and expedia
Tried a random 18 day trip in Nov and for a Corolla, it costs about S$1300 for single driver
If u add another driver, price increases.
Same for GPS.

Some credit cards cover insurance so u dont have to buy from the rental car place, which can be very pricey.

There are also "discount coupons" that can drop the price.
Have to hunt on internet

Many thanks for your advice! I was stunned to see the car rental hike so much indeed! People's been telling me car rental, hotel is cheap in US 😂

To save money, I'd probably pick up the car when leaving SF, else will bear in mind to park in carpark. Likely to get a sedan too :)

I am old school and have been booking from official websites. I suppose i need to be more opened minded and explore other avenues 😁

Thanks for the tips!

It was - everything’s ripped higher post-COVID, unfortunately. There was a wonderful period for like one month in April 2021 when things were cheap, but now everyone’s catching up on three years’ worth of travel that they missed out on, haha.

The thing working in your favor is that early November is typically a cheap time of year. Late November Is super expensive, because everyone travels to their family’s homes for Thanksgiving.

To save money, I'd probably pick up the car when leaving SF, else will bear in mind to park in carpark. Likely to get a sedan too :)
Oh yeah, that’s definitely the way to go. You basically don’t need a car in SF - where are you thinking of going while you’re in town?

It's our first time to USA so likely to do the touristy stuff from SF to LA.

Happily booked US cos SQ tickets fly into SFO and fly out from LAX is S$1100 per pax. Didn't do further research prior to booking flight as I've heard pple say car rental, food and hotel way cheaper than Europe. Kinda got a shock when i realised prices post covid, spike in car break-ins and surge in the homeless. Hopefully it's not as bad as I've read. Just my hb, me, and my 14 and 12 yo girls so it's a little worrying with one man in our travel group. Have read up abit and will avoid tenderloin in SF.

Thanks to everyone feedback here, I'd search for hotel near metro and will take public transport or lyft (cos 4 of us). Then rent a car when leaving SF to LA, drop off car in LA once we arrive.

I read up abt Turo and it's way cheaper than car rental. Not sure if i should even explore Turo..

OK, so you’re doing highway 1 through San Francisco down to Monterey and Big Sur. Monterey is lovely to spend a night in (and the aquarium’s amazing), but you might also want to stop in Big Sur for a night (hit the Glen Oaks Motor Lodge, which, despite the name, is rustic and luxurious).

Keep driving south along Highway 1 until you reach Cambria (don’t miss Hearst Castle on the way), then cut across to Paso Robles, which is another great place to spend a night.

There seems to be limited accom options at Big Sur especially when we r traveling with 2 kids.

Is Carmel by the sea area a good accom area choice? Or any recommendations?

Oh wow, that's shockingly cheap. Honestly you've saved so much on the flights that you can afford to lash out a bit on everything else.

Hopefully it's not as bad as I've read. Just my hb, me, and my 14 and 12 yo girls so it's a little worrying with one man in our travel group. Have read up abit and will avoid tenderloin in SF.
Oh yeah, you'll be fine - there's no real reason to go to the Tenderloin or Mid-Market anyway. You might find yourself on a streetcar through that part of town if you're on your way to the Castro, Dolores Park, or Golden Gate Park, but it's honestly fine - just something you'll pass on the way to the nicer parts of town.

Thanks to everyone feedback here, I'd search for hotel near metro and will take public transport or lyft (cos 4 of us). Then rent a car when leaving SF to LA, drop off car in LA once we arrive.
Oh yeah. Anything around Union Square is fine - the Westin, the Hyatt Regency, or the Palace Hotel are all good picks. They're all close to Powell or Montgomery BART stations, as well - you want to be close to a BART station, because there's a direct BART train from the airport to the city.

Staying out in Fisherman's Wharf is more touristy, but it's also a lot more of a pain to get to, so you'll want to balance those two things.

This sounds like a really good plan.

I read up abt Turo and it's way cheaper than car rental. Not sure if i should even explore Turo..

I've used Turo, and... sometimes it's cheaper, but honestly it's a bit of a pain in the behind? I like just rocking up to the car rental place and driving off. (Pro tip: become a member of the car rental company's frequent driver program! At Hertz and Avis at least, if you're a member of their frequent-customer program you don't need to wait in the queue - you just go to the carpark, grab the car with your name on it, and go.)

There seems to be limited accom options at Big Sur especially when we r traveling with 2 kids.

Hmm. Check out the Glen Oaks, it's the least-extortionately-priced accommodation option around Big Sur. If they don't have accommodation, then your other options:

1) Carmel is very nice, but also very pricey;
2) Monterey is an excellent option - it's more reasonably priced, and spending a night there is a great excuse to go to the aquarium. (If you're a Marriott loyalist, the Monterey Marriott is a perfectly good pick.)
