Dear all, me and my family (wife and 2 kids age 6 & 4) is planning to tour west coast US in late Sep to early Oct this year. As both me and my wife do not drive so this trip will be mostly taking inland tour and internal flight. Below is the plan. Please kindly comment whether is feasible. Thanks.

Day 1 - 27th Sep, Sat.
- Reach San Francisco Airport (arrive time : 12:40pm)
- Buy a 3-Day Visitor Passport at SFO Information Booth.
- Take Bart from airport to either Hotel Beresford or King George Hotel (Which one is good?)
- To Union Square for meal.
- To Fisherman Wharf and Pier 39.
- To Chinatown for dinner

Day 2 - 28th Sep, Sun.
- To Palace of Fine Arts Theatre.
- Take the inland tour to visit :1. Marin Headlands
2. Muir Woods National Park
3. Muir Beach Overlook
4. Sausalito
5. Ferry/Bay Cruise
- To Grace Cathedral
- Dinner at union square or chinatown.

Day 3 - 29th Sep, Mon.
- Take a inland tour to Yosemite.

Day 4 - 30th Sep, Tue.
- Reach Los Angeles International Airport. (arrive time : 2:40pm)
- Take a shared van to Best Western Anaheim Inn or Holiday Inn Anaheim-Resort Area (Which one is good?)
- Tour around Anaheim Resort and to cheesecake factory for dinner.

Day 5 - 1st Oct, Wed.
- Whole day at disneyland.

Day 6 - 2nd Oct, Thur.
- Whole day at disneyland.

Day 7 - 3rd Oct, Fri.
- Book a van to bring us to San Diego Seaworld.
- Whole day at San Diego Seaworld.

Day 8 - 4th Oct, Sat.
- Book a van to bring us to San Diego Zoo.
- Whole day at San Diego Zoo.

Day 9 - 5th Oct, Sun.
- Book a van to bring us to Desert Hill Premium Outlets. (Should we skip this if we also intend to visit Las Vegas Premium Outlets?)

Day 10 - 6th Oct, Mon.
- Book a inland tour to LA/Hollywood Grand Tour.

Day 11 - 7th Oct, Tue.
- Arrive at Las Vegas Airport (arrive time : 3:40pm)
- Proceed to hotel via cab. (any hotel to recommend?)
- Walk along the strip.

Day 12 - 8th Oct, Wed.
- Book a tour to Grand Canyon.

Day 13 - 9th Oct, Thu.
- Whole day shopping at Las Vegas Premium Outlet North.

Day 14 - 10th Oct, Fri.
- Arrive at San Francisco Airport (arrive time : 2:10pm)
- Proceed to hotel.
- To Lombard Street to see the famous crooked road.
- Proceed to Union Square, chinatown or fisherman whaff for dinner.

Day 15 - 11th Oct, Sat.
- SQ from San Francisco back to SIN.

Please kindly comment on my plan. Also to check at San Francisco, if by 8pm still walking outside is it safe?

My coming October plan is the same as yours. Mine departing on the 16th though. I am doing quite a lot of local tours as well cause I cant drive.

In SF, I am looking into Dylan's Tour $75 cause it is a van tour. Not big bus and covers city and Muir Woods. There is a tour that goes to Monterey-Carmel by Best Bay Area Tours, $110. Again we choose this cause it is a small tour group. Grayline does the above two tours using big tour bus and cheaper price.

Have you booked your domestic air tickets? I booked Southwest and flying into Orange County John Wayne Airport (SNA) which is a lot nearer to Disneyland. The taxi fare from airport is around 45 dollars compared to LAX.

And, we are booking with Anaheim Visitor Centre for Dessert Hill shopping trip and the Hollywood/LA day tour.

As for Las Vegas, I am planing a one night stay at Grand Canyon Bright Angel Lodge. Will be taking the bus tour to and from GCNP. But, having a huge problem deciding which company to take. Anybody has a good suggestion?

If I am not mistaken, usually those promo prices are straight SIN-SFO return and not multi-city. But I am not that familiar with USA pricing as mine was redeemed with air miles. Maybe others could comment on that.

Bus tours to Grand Canyon South Rim

Dear all,

I know most of us here drive while on holiday in USA. But I am wondering if anybody knows of a good, reliable tour company that does bus tour to Grand Canyon South Rim? I have checked online and there are so many to choose from. Most have variable good and very bad reviews. I also need to make sure they are able to pick me up from Grand Canyon the next day as I am spending a night at the park. TIA.

In LV, any recommended hotel? We will stay there for 5 days.

I'm an MGM Hotels loyalist, so all my recommendations are MGM properties. That being said: if you want to get fancy, pick the Aria or the Bellagio - or my personal favourite, the Vdara. (The rooms are huge - basically full studio apartments - and it's ridiculously cheap.)

If you need to keep it cheap, go for the Mandalay Bay, or maybe the Mirage. Skip the MGM Grand (it's way too big and crowded); the Monte Carlo is being dug up; and don't cheap out by going to the Luxor or the Excalibur, they're both awful.

I was told Yosemite might be closed in Dec. Does it mean no entry or its programs maybe off? Planning to stay a night there.
They seems to have a few different parks inside. Which one we should not missed?

Yosemite Valley (the famous bit) is open all year 'round, but during winter the roads that run all the way through the park from east to west are closed. So you can't come in from the Las Vegas side and get out on the San Francisco side - you have to loop all the way down to Bakersfield and come back around (which is about a six-hour non-stop drive).

Anybody been to yosemite, death valley and grand canyon? Like to check, any obvious different between the network coverage by AT&T and T-mobile in these regions.

It'll be iffy everywhere, because all of those areas are quite remote, but generally AT&T will be better.

Thanks for the reply. The inland tour which we taking is sanfranshuttletours so far quite a good review on them. Do you have any experience with them?

Seriously only my wife interested in shopping and high chance we will just buys clothes for our own and the kids. We also abit worried of our luggage getting overweight if we shop too much cos i heard USA had heavy charges for overweight luggages. But if i can only choose one is it Dessert Hill is better than LV premium outlet?

With regards to staying at SD do you have any recommendation on hotels? Cos the van operator told us from Anaheim Resort to SD only take 1.5 hour so no point moving to SD.

For vegas, tentatively plan is to have full day shopping since it will be our last day at vegas and also do not know how big is the outlet for us to shop. So if half day we can complete then we will back to the strip to explore. Wana to watch the show but with kids quite difficult. For hotel in vegas, yes our budget is ard USD$200 per night so Encore At Wynn Las Vegas is worth to stay? How is the buffet the hotel offer? Also good?

We did try SQ website to arrive at SF and fly from LAX back to SIN but SQ charge us more if we choose that option. Can check which website you usually choose for booking flight? Cos we will prefer SQ rather than other airlines.

sorry no experience with sanfranshuttletours. my siblings took tour b4 but I don't recall which company. most tour a very hurry hurry type.

U are flying domestic from LA to Vegas, and Vegas to San Fran. which airline will u be using? if U flying southwest its 2 bags per person and 50lb each. just check in another bag and not have to worry about excess fees. such fees is like US$75 a pop. us$75 can get a samsonite suitcase. there maybe an increase price to fly out from LA but U are saving time, to fly out from San Fran U have get there and its a US$150-250 price per person. add that price to your ticket out! If u state just sgd$100 plus diff to exit a diff city it's cheaper than domestic! Why save that money and create inconvenience?

besides SQ, U can look at Cathay, ANA, Korean Air they have worked out well for me. Cathay is like US$1400 per pax flying into SFO and leaving LAX. Emirates price also close. they service is not that far off from SQ.

travel 1.5hrs to SD for me is a waste of time. U burn 3hrs on the road when U can be relaxing in the hotel or checking out local food joint? U are also paying extra for shuttle service. U can stay at San Diego Marriott Del Mar for like us$130 its near San Diego Zoo.

Encore at Wynn is good value for $$. as for buffet. Wynn buffet is pretty good but I am sick of buffet! I usually check out those celebrity chef restaurants. Are are just loads of good restaurants there.

Aria only offer king size bed no sofa bed. Fitting 2 kids can be tight. 2 queen bed is usd$250. It's your call. They are nice place. Encore is a suite vs aria a normal room.

Shopping brands like coach, Brooke's brother makes stuff for outlet. Ralph Lauren makes polo tee for outlet. Diff not much from store. Shop clearance rack and chancing of getting out of season regular retail stuff is high. Of course a lot cheaper.
Kids clothes I didn't find outlet and retail quality diff. Other than diff stores in diff outlet, diff outlet carry diff clearance item. Bargain hunter may make sense but getting a van out what's the price?

You don't need to ask us. Ask Tripadvisor; that's what it's there for. And it tells me both of them are, to be honest, pretty crappy. Look again.

Day 8 - 4th Oct, Sat.

San Diego's two or three hours drive from Los Angeles. Don't do two consecutive day trips to SD: instead, move San Diego after Los Angeles and stay a night or two in San Diego, then fly to Vegas from there.

Yes, it'll be exactly the same. Skip it. Go to San Diego a day early instead.

You're going to Vegas and you're not actually doing anything in Vegas.

So I know that everyone here is obsessed with premium outlets and you think you're going to snag a bargain or whatever the hell. You're not. The brands all know exactly what you're thinking, and they make cheaper, crappier versions of their products designed specifically for people like you who fly thousands of miles and spend thousands of dollars on plane tickets to save a couple hundred dollars on a Coach handbag or whatever. They're playing you for fools.

Don't give in to them. Skip the Premium Outlets. Visit the Mob Museum and the Neon Museum and ride the gondolas in the Venetian. See Penn and Teller at the Rio. See the Shark Reef or Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson show at the Mandalay Bay. If you really must go shopping, go to the Crystals mall at the CityCenter complex and swim around in luxury for a couple of hours. But don't spend an entire day wandering around a depressing outlet mall in the outskirts of Vegas when you could be doing something way more fun.

Yes, it's fine. Stay out of the Tenderloin - basically anything in the triangle bounded by Geary in the north, Van Ness in the west, and Market Street in the south - and you'll be totally fine. And walking outside at night is fine any time - the homeless people aren't crazy, they won't rob you or anything; I've walked home from the nightclubs at two in the morning and never even felt scared.

Honestly, the only corner you actually want to stay away from is Turk and Taylor - and if you just walk straight through there you won't have a problem anyway. (I accidentally walked through there after dark with my parents when they came here last. Nobody cared.)

Make sure you get some local colour, as well. Try the restaurants in the Ferry Building, and go to North Beach for your seafood instead of Fishermans Wharf (which is a horrible tourist trap). Go down to Castro Street (there's some great cheap eats along there, and the Creme Brulee Cart hangs out there on Friday nights). And if you're feeling like an adventure, get breakfast at Homeskillet at the corner of Market and Sixth: that used to be the most divey, dirty, sketchy corner in the whole city, but it's suddenly (just in the last couple of years) become safe, (reasonably) clean, and genuinely trendy. And Homeskillet is great - big servings of tasty eggs, bacon, and hash browns for $8 to $10 each.

Thanks for the reply. As high chance i will be staying at Hotel Beresford at 635 Sutter Street. Is it near the Tenderloin area? I saw tripadvisor quite a good feedback on hotel beresford. Do you got any comment on the hotel? or any hotel you can recommend for staying at SF for a family like us?

Are we looking at the same Tripadvisor? The Beresford gets only 53% "thumbs up", which is pretty awful all things considered.

Check out the Mosser - it's in a slightly better part of town, about the same price, and a vastly better rating. (If your budget stretches a little further, check out the Kimpton hotels - friendly, charming, super nice, and not outrageously expensive.)

Ooh. The Wynn and the Encore are quite nice - personally I like the Aria better because it's more central, but you won't hear me saying no to the Encore. The buffet is apparently pretty good too - but if you decide to take my advice and go to the Aria, make sure you sneak next door to the Wicked Spoon buffet at the Cosmopolitan. It's mindblowingly good.

I think the Beresford is very near or right inside the Tenderloin area.

If you want to stay near Union Square and not spend a bomb, you can consider Hotel Stratford on Powell Street, a few streets east. Very near to the BART station and the area is much better at night.

USA East Coast itinerary

I'm planning a trip to USA East coast in late Nov 2014 for my family of 4 including 2 children age 13,14.

Basically we're travelling/driving from Orlando to New York but I don't know how to fill the gap for day #17,18,19. Any suggestions on where I can go during these few days? My children do not like museums nor historic monuments.
Any suggestions on "must do" places on east coast? Any other suggestions is also greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just wonder why you're a MGM loyalist?

Well - when I first stayed in Vegas back in '08, I stayed at TheHotel at the Mandalay Bay (now the Four Seasons) and it blew my little Australian mind. Huge rooms; epic strip views; luxury service... I liked it so much I figured I'd stay loyal to the MGM chain.

Also, though this might not be so relevant for you: MGM gives you loyalty points for your hotel and restaurant spend as well as your gambling spend, so you can get some pretty hefty status without dropping a penny at the tables.

We like big rooms and preferably not too crowded hotel.

If your budget stretches to it, book the Four Seasons - they apparently have a great kid-friendly service that'll give you some "me time". No other hotels on the strip really have any specifically kid-friendly services, but try the Vdara; it's big, it's uncrowded, but it's close to everything (two minutes' walk from the Aria and the Bellagio).

For Yosemite, I'll probably need to consult the local before setting off. Never driven in the States before so need to ensure all details and route are pre-planned.

wow! U have so many days for Univeral Studio? Smoky Mt not alot to see if U are not a big hiker or camper. Its not the yellowstone park.

no museums nor historic monuments but into loads of nature ie Blue Ridge Parkway and Shanadoah? U are so close to KY might as well check out Bardstown and the US Bourbon culture maybe spend 1 day taking horse back riding classes or those trails or checking out BBQ joints.

the 2 virginal National park isn't a must do, they not really famous outside ppl around there. oh.. since U are planning to drive U looked the the surcharge cause of diff drop off location. The drive from Orlando to Smoke is a good 9hr. with stops its like 10hr+. Nov the days are short.

Do u need 5 days at disney world n 3 days at universal studios?
Seems a bit excessive.

Have u factored in flight times to tennessee and from virginia to nyc?
Flight is short but airport checkin etc can take at least half a day.

Since u r in florida, maybe u might be interested in visiting the atlantic side beaches like daytona or cocoa beach, that is if u r interested in beaches.
But also note that end nov is the tailend of the hurricane season.
Predicted low hurricanes this year but u never know.
Buy travel insurance.

Nyc is mostly shopping n museums.
If u r there around thanksgiving nov 27th, there is a big parade in nyc.
Many stores might close during that time but there is also a mad shopping rush around then.
If u know friends around that area, u can try a traditional american thanksgiving dinner.
Travel is quite hectic as people go visit families.

A taxi, are you joking? Check the map. It's 150 kilometres, and taxis in the rest of the world aren't as cheap as Singapore. You'd be up for hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

If you're really absolutely insistent on not driving, you'll need to get yourself a van or something like that. Just get the van dude to take you one way from Anaheim to San Diego. Your other option is to fly - there should be non-stops from Anaheim airport to SD for pretty cheap.

The last time i holidayed in the States was 21yr ago . Just hope I can quickly get into the left hand drive and year end weather. You see, i got rheumatism. So my joints will act up in cold places.

My gal is 14 and boy is 13 and both love theme parks. We've been to Anaheim Disneyland twice when they were younger and since they getting bigger, this will probably be our last Disney trip. We'll be going USA Nov 12 to Dec 2.

Your suggestions of Key west in FL, Hershey Pa, Kentucky are interesting and will include them in our itinerary.

No Niagara Falls? - went there before
no kennedy space center? - expensive and children not keen

Didn't realise its so far from Orlando to Smokey. Is there any place to stop over?
Not that we must go to the 2 virginal National park but just donno where else to go enroute to NYC.
