boots. don't wear the free saf sneakers with all the air holes. will be v cold

Is it that bad?

Don't know about boots but I didn't feel cold when I wore my sneakers paired with Timberland's Merino Wool socks (very comfortable and warming).

Also, SAF boots actually can season if you're smart. When you shine them with wax, apply the wax (in layers too) on the breathable part. TADAH!

Though I believe the older SAF version of boots has no holes.

you came in sept rite? not that cold at all then. He is coming in Dec which is normally much colder. current predicted temp in Dec is mostly less than 10 degrees (New York December Weather 2014 - AccuWeather Forecast for NY 10007) If suay and meet polar vortex, temps confirm go below 0 degrees.

SAF boots is ok since all covered and waterproof. I said don't wear SAF sneakers because they have holes which will let in wind. Oso they are not water proof so are not good if meet rain/melted snow.

These 'Frontier' boots feature faster-drying nylon uppers and outsoles that allow for the quicker lateral movements required in urban warfare.

Whoops! Misread. Sorry!

Yes, I guess I didn't experience anything that cold and wet yet.

Still remember my army days where I specially bought the older boots, so during river crossing, water would be able to leak out.

I've worn the older Goretex boots (no holes version) for winter / snowy weather. Kindly note that as indicated in the diagram, the boots are for tropical jungle use. When snow gets stuck in the grooves, it gets extremely slippery. Very good waterproofing, especially for walking in un-compacted snow.

are you planning on doing lots of trekking? If not, I think any waterproof covered shoe is actually fine as long as you are pairing it with warm socks. That's what I tell my parents to wear when they visit since they are only walking around the urban jungle in NY.

I have to agree with Telur17, no need to buy special winter boots if U already have a pair of waterproof or water resistant footwear.

no point getting a winter boots if U plan on using just this time.

if U plan on hiking outside the trail then maybe U want to get a pair a boots, make sense only if U plan to wear them upon returning.
those goodyear welted boots is waterproof but costly if u dont wear them back here no pt buying so expensive boots.

else something like that will do

agree with patryn. no need any special shoe in this case. As long as you are wearing covered shoes with warm socks, it is ok. Just don't get those with air holes as it can be v cold when the wind blows. My parents also just use their normal shoes from SG. Worst come to worst, just buy a new pair here. Shoes will be cheaper here probably.
