Not familiar enough with the area for your questions. Maybe someone else can answer.

Check to see if your credit card already provides car rental insurance.
If u already drive in sg, your car insurance might also provide rental car coverage.

Thx for the heads up.
1.Which is a cheap & reliable car rental? Which insurance should I buy? How much does the rental of GPS cost?
2. I'm looking @ Airbnb. Wat is a good area to stay? DTLA? Anaheim? I'm not gonna be spending too much time on theme parks though. Shopping @ Premium Outlets is a must. Is there a premium outlet that I must go?
3. Say if I'm not gonna rent a car, I heard I need to buy coach tix to go premium outlets?

it seems insurance for driving in usa is optional, even when cops pull u over to give u speeding ticket (thats why i bought a speed radar detector after) did not ask for any insurance too.. but of coz best to have for own assurance

its hard to enjoy LA without a car, everywhere else is so inaccessible by buses

in usa, there is not only uber, there is LYFT too..

Insurance is definitely required by law, try driving a non-rental car. Like sg, 3rd party coverage is required by law to drive. The car rental company will definitely have some sort of insurance themselves so as not to violate the law. That is Rental company to law. If you do not pay for additional insurance with rental company, this also means Rental company has the right to claim the cost of damages from you, whether or not it is covered by their own insurance.

Radar detector isn't a fool-proof way, you will need to understand how it works. The cops can still catch you by LASER and most of them would not like it if they see a radar detector in your car when they pull you over.

If not enough money, withdraw from atm.

The exchange rates in usa are terrible if u go to a money changer or bank.

If u have citibank here, u can withdraw from citibank atms there with no extra charge.
There are probably other affliated banking atms if u dont use citibank.

U can use your current bank's atm card but u incur extra charge, a few dollars, each time u withdraw.

Some banks are affiliated with other banks so they dont have extra charge.
U can check with your bank.

Atms have the best xchange rate.

So I need to set up a savings acc with Citibank?

you can put your sgd inside citibank sg, ask them open a usd account inside ur own account, whenever u feel rate good just exchange sgd to usd into the usd account, but before you leave for usa, ask them to set the main withdrawal account to the usd account , than withdraw from citibank usa, i think free

while halfway in the trip, u need money again, u still can exchange ur sgd in ur citibank to usd.. so dont bring the cash to usa, just bring the card, keep the money in the sg citibank

1. all rental place are reliable, issue is you want a reliable car not a reliable car rental shop. how many days will u be there? GPA cost ~$5 a day, U can buy a app on phone and navigating for your hubby. or you can use Here for free.
http://360.here.com/2015/03/19/why-offline-maps-how-manage-here-ios/

2. U just want to visit Disneyland? if so Anaheim! Airbnb is safer than Craigslist.

I like http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/desert-hills
but compare for the list of shops and go to the one which offer U the places U wanna go.

3. Not outlets are accessible by coach bus.
Desert hills U can pay US$75 and up per pax to get there.

At Anaheim U can go this on a local bus
http://www.simon.com/mall/the-outlets-at-orange/about

no bus or coach going to this, U have to drive or get Uber/Taxi
http://www.simon.com/mall/ontario-mills/about

I see a lot of uber this uber that on Airbnb. Now I know got LYFT. My concern is if I don drive, how to go to the premium outlets? Kmart? Walmart?

Kmart - yucks!!
Walmart? -- OK...
but U should check out TJ Max, Marshalls, Home Goods...
if U shop alot it best to drive. Imagine carrying a load of stuff on bag, both hands and be walking around in that big place. Take coach/bus with all the stuff..

or does it make sense to shop North end, return to car and drop off all the bags and drive to south end and shop.. hands empty shopping.. or U like hands full shop?

if U were to drive read this! read page 23-46, 51-68
https://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl600.pdf

with regards to speeding.. radar detector. our cheap usd$500 vs the polices us$20K equipment hmmm... don't count on device.

2) if you intend to hang around hollywood, i would suggest airbnb as hotel rates are pretty high in this area. i stayed in an airbnb when i was in hollywood, it was a short 15 mins walk to hollywood boulevard. as for disneyland, i would suggest staying in one of the motels near disneyland. i stayed in knights inn anaheim and i enjoyed my stay a lot. the motel was recently refurbished and the receptionists were so kind and friendly. you can take ART (anaheim resort transportation) to disneyland (USD 12 per pax for a 3 day unlimited pass), the bus stop is just right outside the motel. the bus journey takes about 10-20 mins, depending on the bus timings.

as for outlets, i went to north las vegas outlet, it is located very close to the strip so you dont have to waste time travelling. i initially wanted to go desert hills outlet store as it is supposedly the best, but dropped the idea later as it takes about an hour to get there, not worth the travelling time and transportation fees. moreover, the outlet stores are more or less the same.

hope the above helps!

Hey peeps, am planning to head to LA next May. First time to US, what am I to expect?
You'll love it. I'm assuming you're a group of adults, so I guess the question is - what do you like to do? Are you there for the shopping; for the beaches; for the theme parks; for the museums; for the wide open spaces... ?

Traveling in a group of 4. Self drive or use Uber is better?
Depends what you want to do and where you're staying. If you're staying around the west-side (Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice) you can probably get by with Uber - and if you're drinking AT ALL, you'll want to use Uber, the cops over here take drink-driving VERY SERIOUSLY.

But if you're staying way over the other side of town, or if you're doing a lot of driving, you'll probably want to rent a car.

I saw from rentalcars.com, they require driver's CC. Really cannot use other pple's CC? Help pls....
Nope, they'll need the driver's credit card probably, but you can add yourself as a driver or get a credit card for your significant other. This won't be too hard.

Thx for the heads up.
1.Which is a cheap & reliable car rental? Which insurance should I buy? How much does the rental of GPS cost?

1) I personally like Avis, though they're not exactly cheap. I've used Hertz in the past and never had a problem with them, but they're also horrifically expensive compared to the other companies.
2) Insurance: get the "third-party liability" insurance, and nothing else. You don't need the "personal accident insurance", and as long as you're a careful driver you probably don't need the "excess reduction", that just saves you some money if you ding the car.
3) GPS rental usually runs $10-$15 a day, so if you're renting the car for more than three days or so it's cheaper to just buy the Navigon GPS app for your smartphone of choice. It's about $49 for the whole-of-USA app, and you can download the maps to your phone so you don't even need data coverage.

2. I'm looking @ Airbnb. Wat is a good area to stay? DTLA? Anaheim? I'm not gonna be spending too much time on theme parks though.

Here's the thing: Los Angeles is HUGE. You could fit the whole of Singapore within Greater Los Angeles about four or five times over. (Click that link: it shows you what Singapore would look like if it were dropped on top of Los Angeles. That might give you an idea of the distances we're talking about.)

There are probably two areas you'll want to choose between: the west side, where Hollywood and Santa Monica and Beverly Hills are; and Anaheim, where the theme parks are. Pick one and stick to it; the drive between them is an hour-long freeway nightmare even when traffic is light, and traffic in LA is never light.

I'd pick the west side, just because I like Santa Monica and Venice Beach; if you pick Santa Monica, the Oceana Hotel is a really good bet, I've stayed there and I can endorse it. Don't stay in Hollywood; it's tacky as hell and honestly kind of sketchy. West Hollywood, on or near Sunset Strip, is a much better bet; I hear good things about the Sunset Marquis and the Andaz West Hollywood.

Don't stay in downtown LA, it's completely dead. Nothing happens there after 5pm; I've even walked through it at lunchtime on a workday and there's nobody on the streets anywhere.

Shopping @ Premium Outlets is a must. Is there a premium outlet that I must go?
3. Say if I'm not gonna rent a car, I heard I need to buy coach tix to go premium outlets?

If you really have to, go to the Citadel Outlets - it's not that far out of town (about an hour's drive from Santa Monica) and like people have said, the stores are all the same anyway.

The people recommending Desert Hills... that's an awfully long way from anywhere. If you're going to go there, you might as well make an overnight trip of it, and spend a day or two exploring all the historical Hollywood glamor of Palm Springs.

As shopping is a priority for us, perhaps can I asked what is a good place to stay or shop? If dessert hills is a better choice, I seriously don't mind driving that far. To me the range in the stores must be big.. Hehehe

Yes travelling with 4 adults.. Shopping is our top priority. Theme parks will only be Universal Studios prob 1 or 2 days depending on how many day pass we can get. And stop by Warner Bros for a 3 hr tour. If time permits, perhaps might drive up to San Diego's Zoo (is this worth my time)?

Depends what you want to do and where you're staying. If you're staying around the west-side (Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice) you can probably get by with Uber - and if you're drinking AT ALL, you'll want to use Uber, the cops over here take drink-driving VERY SERIOUSLY.

We are prepared to rent a car as a lot of shopping will be done & it's pointless to use uber when there are 4 adults. We are choosing to stay either near Ventura or Wilshire Blvd as they are rather near to Universal Studios & Warner Bros. not considering Anaheim as we are not going Disney. If not DTLA, then where? U mention Santa Monica & Beverly Hills?

Yup. Done

Cost of rental of GPS factored in. Gonna be shared so it's ok.

Noted with thanks. Really grateful for such a detailed insight.
