Shopping is not high on our to-do list in USA, instead gaining experience and memories from this trip is the No. 1. However, our friends, colleagues and relatives upon hearing we are going to the States, started giving us their requests of "cheap" branded products such as Coach, Kate Spade, etc to help them buy. Of course, we can't fulfill all their requests but there are some that we have to fulfill due to the "power" they have over us, eg an immediate superior, in-laws.

U will be spending a good day shopping esp u HAVE to buy some things back for these group of ppl. It can be stressful going around trying to score them items they request if regular stores don't have them, or they see why u not getting them the best deal.

U cannot let ppl know u going to states, there are always loads of shopping request. It's trouble lol

Look on the bright side outlet shopping itself it's an experience.

Do u have a car w insurance in sg?
If so, insurance policies sometimes cover rental cars.

Some credit cards also provide collision insurance which covers damage to rental car.
Amex card can provide full rental insurance.
Insurance auto kick in when u use the cc to pay but u have to decline the rental company inurance.

Hi Shiny Things, dun mind me asking a question as I will be renting a car in the USA too

The excess reduction is pretty expensive, almost the cost of the rental of the car.
If we do not take up the excess reduction for car rental and if an accident happens (touch wood), what's the cost we are looking at in paying the rental company?
Does renting of the car already has a basic insurance which comes with it?
Both my gf and I have driving licenses but are not very experienced drivers.

Thanks

Tell them to go f*ck themselves. And if you can't bring yourself to say that to them directly, tell them this:

"A good friend who lives in San Francisco told us that the bags that they sell at outlet malls are made just for cheap outlet mall shoppers. They're low quality, they'll fall apart the first time you use them, you don't want to waste hundreds of dollars buying something that's low quality and we don't want to waste your time shipping them back to you, so we're sorry, but we can't do that. Also go f*ck yourself."

The boss and the in-laws... well, they can have their crappy bags. But ffs, this is YOUR holiday, not theirs. Don't spend it shopping for other ungrateful people. (And if you do, make sure you lie to them about how much the bags cost so you get paid for your time.)

Btw, we won't be staying at Aria becos although it is ave US$124 per nite, with the resort fee of US$28 added in, it came up to a total of US$333 (with taxes) and we don't want to pay so much for a room which we just sleep at night. I should be booking Mirage, it came up to a total of US$228 (with taxes) for 2 nights.

Hey, no worries, the Mirage is a great pick too. It might be worth checking the Mandalay Bay as well though - it's a little nicer than the Mirage and around the same price.

Don't take the excess reduction. Basically you're probably going to be on the hook for a few grand if you have a major accident without the excess reduction; with it, you're on the hook for zero. They'll try to sell this pretty hard, but you don't have to take it.

If u ok with the surcharge on 1 way car rental great otherwise consider other companies. Try booking on dollar.co.uk. U have to realize 1 way drop off has high surcharge. If u worry about the upsell in insurance etc, those numbers usually lower than the 1 way surcharge
I tried that website and for the period 30 Jul SFO to 4 Aug LAX, I got a quote of USD 244.16. Is this the final price becos I do not see any breakdown at all or even the 1-way drop charges?

It is quite difficult not to tell people where we are going when we have to apply leave for more than 2 weeks and in our absence covering our work. Don't worry, they do know that we are going USA F&E so I can always tell them I got lost and could not find the bags they wanted. We will only go if we have more than enough time.

Mandalay Bay is US$240 per night for those dates we want. VEGAS.com - Shopping Cart

Cdw it's never worth in any countries/cars or campervans, as long as you're experienced driver.

No matter how experience u are, tiredness, animals and weather may cloud your judgement and put yourself in a accident

Thanks all for the advice.
I did buy travel insurance, but it only cover $500 dollars in excess, my gf does not have travel insurance as she is studying over there.
Think this time round will get the excess as it's my first time driving in USA, abit scared of getting into accident without insurance.

Spend three days in San Francisco doing all the touristy things, but don't forget to be a bit adventurous as well. Go check out the second-hand clothing stores in the Haight-Ashbury hippie district. Go to El Farolito taqueria at 24th and Mission BART for the best burritos in the world.
A few questions with regards to San Francisco as I only know Golden Bridge.

1. Where should we stay?

2. Public transport or rental car?

3. What are the touristy things to do in SF?

1) I've said this before, I'll say it again: if you don't give us a price range and a date range, we can't give you a meaningful suggestion. I've got hotels that I like, but they might be out of your price range or booked solid when you're here.

2) Public transport, definitely. San Francisco is an incredibly car-unfriendly city.

3) Oh dude, c'mon, there's plenty of answers in this thread. Have a read. If you really can't find any good answers, then come back again and ask.

Dude,

My 3 questions are linked. Sorry abt the misunderstanding, but I did not ask for a hotel, just "where" as in the place or region where Qn 2 and Qn 3 are concerned. If Qn 2 is a public transport, I am sure the "where" shd be somewhere where there is accessible public transport. If the answer to Qn 2 is rental car, I am sure u would give a good example linking the "where" in Qn 1 to the usage of a car. Qn 3 will then tie everything together. If the touristy things can ONLY be done by a car, then the "where" in Qn 1 shd be near the important touristy things. If the touristy things can be reached by public transport easily, then the "where" shd be near a public transport hub.

Hope that clarify what I meant by those questions.

Dude.

OK, that all makes sense - thanks for the clarification! You'll want to stay around Union Square, because it's the public-transport hub - avoid staying in Fishermans Wharf, because it's right out at the end of the bus lines and streetcar lines, so it's a pain to get there from anywhere.

There are stacks of hotels around Union Square, so hit up Tripadvisor and find one you like.

Don't stay around the airport, either - it's way too far from anything.

I booked my car rentals from Alamo via www.vroomvroomvroom.com. Nett price as per website. No further charges were made to my credit card.

The savings are huge compared to booking directly ! For 5days - LA drop off at Vegas, renting a Ford Focus cost US$360.

From SF to LA for 5days - Hyundai Elantra - US$180

In SF, i felt there was no need for a car actually since we left the car at hotel valet for 3days and walked around from our hotel near Chinatown (Orchard Garden Hotel). Golden gate bridge was so foggy that we can't see **** that evening but we did have a good time along Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Oooooo delicious seafood!

The only reason why we rented is because it's cheap and also we had to head to Napa Valley the next morning for hot air ballon ride. Parking is not that cheap in some area. It will cost US$3/hr. Hotel valet costs US$42/day.

Photos from our trip to USA

Thanks to everyone here who has gave us advice and tips!

Here are some photos we took from our 1st trip to USA. We went exploring a few cities, Anaheim for Disneyland, San Diego for Comics Convention 2014, Las Vegas for their casinos & shows, San Francisco for Golden Gate Bridge & their famous piers, Los Angeles for Venice and Santa Monica beaches. We were there from 21 July to 4 August 2014. We planned this trip during that period because of SDCC 2014 (San Diego Comic Con).

Hope that our photos would interest you to go there. Photos taken with Nikon D800E and D610.
