When USD was appreciating like mad no one was complaining  I think best not to play forex like that.

For myself, my New York Times subscription has increased 1% this year because of GST, but the cost in SGD has fallen by more than 1% due to SGD appreciation.

Why so? Maybe they have gotten it when it was 1.2x no?
I got about 2k USD since my last trip when rate was 1.90
Now can even remember where I put those bills :s13:

Some loose change of eur, GBP aud, idr and HKD all down against the mighty SGD. Now holding myr for expenses and likely to see record low.

Investors should not focus on short-term currency movements. I’ve been DCA’ing S27 (SPY) in my SRS since 2020. There is no difference in SGD or USD — I’m close to break-even either way.

The SGD has been zigzagging +/- 4% from the 1.38 level for the past 5 years. Ironically, the SGD was 1.38 when I first arrived in Singapore in Oct, 1996.

SGD is quite stable on a long-term basis, and if you look at how the currency is managed against a trade weighted basket of currencies, this should come as no surprise.

maybe with your gold bars?
Those little gold that I have was at exchange rate about 2.20 and gold was about US$700. Now gold about US$1900 what do I really gained? Money placed in ordinary FD would fare better. I closed the safe box for my gold and placed them in a box and leave it in my drawer and let it rot till I expire :D Now I am holding a S$10,000 note and I will be losing $400 interest p.a. My fren will be worst off holding about 200 pcs

Equities not so bad, its those that bought US t-bills and bonds that will feel the pain.

depending on circumstances.

if you already got USD from long ago, not necessarily.

but if you buy USD just for t-bills and bonds then maybe.

Its the duration, not so much about bonds or equities.

Long duration bonds, whether investment grade or USTs, are up BIG in the last couple of weeks.
