USyd or UQ?

Hi, doing science and am having quite a hard time choosing which uni.

USyd - 3 years (no exemptions), no Hons but can +1year

UQ - 2 years (1 year exemption), no Hons but +1year for it = same as USyd

I'm leaning towards USyd due to its reputation but is getting a Hons degree from UQ better in terms of giving me more options when I graduate? Or is reputation more important?

I know grades matter too but just in terms of reputation vs hons?

Thanks

UK not on your radar? 3 yr direct honors cheaper plus u save a yr.

Sci is pretty broad any specific area?

Are u going for higher degree in sci in oz or else where?
Work? Private or civil?

Reputation why isn't uofmelb short listed? If u are concern with cost, I would go Canada/states CC route and transfer to UT, mcgill or UCLA

GPA's not high enough for USyd's exemptions. /: and I don't really wanna talk about GPA now.

Patryn - I have thought about the UK, and still am, but my family is more comfortable with me being physically closer, amongst other reasons of my own (PR etc).

I also intend on higher degrees, in the UK or Canada. Not fond of the U.S.
Post grad med is a goal but so is private biological research. Yup

nothing wrong with bad gpa. if you made it to usyd it should be 2.5 and above? i know worse

i was from poly with ****ty gpa managed to eke out to a few good universities and do better then the students from elite JCs.

PR? are you pr of aussie , if not they have been tightening it up. On the other hand in the US STEM from what i know is in demand

Med school uk or Canada? U can almost forget about Canada, only 1 or 2 med school accepts foreign students and on top of that quota is limited to 2-3, unless u have PR.

UK - u better do a honors degree in oz, go with UQ. PR UK us hard but doctor much easier.

Canada offer 3 yrs of work visa upon graduation. Work 2 yrs there can try to apply for PR. Not fond of US, but its medicine it the best in world. 3 yrs bio sci degree at UQ, have u looked in avail jobs and which PR cat to apply? U better start planning early and monitor changes.

Since family wants u to stay close, don't understand the reason behind it.

What do you mean by doctor much easier in the UK?

Aunt married?
If single maybe apply for your mum/dad to get PR.
If not she will have 1st help your grand parents to get PR then wait for them to be citizen then apply for your parents.
Super long man, u might as well depend in yourself.

if U are a doc, in most case PR to anywhere is alot easier. qns is can you get into Med school and become a doc. Residency is always an issue in OZ, iirc someone posted his experience; from a GO8 Uni reading Medicine and didn't score any Residency in OZ. if I can dig out the post will share the link

for OZ PR. I am shock U didn't find this. Not hard to google if U dream to get PR. need to understand the facts before thinking my aunt did it yrs ago same rules apply. They no longer apply loh.. 3yrs later..
Remaining Relative Visa (Offshore) (Subclass 115)
This visa is for you if both of these apply:

-you have a brother, sister, parent (or step-equivalent) who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen usually resident in Australia

-you and your partner have no brothers, sisters, non-dependent children, parents (or step-equivalents) other than those in Australia.

I definitely have read of internship problems in Aus but they do seem to be trying to be able to guarantee it for all graduates?

I saw other criteria for PR, like by just depending on myself, so yea.

Just trying to find out whether USyd (rep) or UQ (hons) would give me better/more options once I graduate :)

USdy general degree no honors, will be hard to get into UK Med school.
reputation will not go far without honors, its USdy not Harvard/MIT leh..
even in SG Usdy vs UQ no diff man esp if U can get 1.1 from UQ

no such thing as guarantee, that is residency not internship.

personally, I'll choose USyd if money isn't a problem for you to stay on for one more year. you get both reputation + hons.

U are right just go usdy and read honors there!
Can afford medical school what's another aud$40-50k right?
Med school 3-4 yrs later will cost over 350k anyway. Add Bach cost that's over 500k to burn no small sum of $$

Yea, was thinking of that too. Just don't know if the extra year/money is worth it.

Regardless, thanks all for your input.

BrightSparks Singapore Scholarship & Higher Education Forum - View Single Post - UNSW vs Monash medical school

Hey guys,

I'm currently a medical student studying in Australia. Before coming to Australia, just thought that you guys should know about the current situation here.

There is an internship crisis and it is likely international students will not get any jobs in Australia after graduating, i.e. you will be booted out of the country once you have paid all your fees and completed your education. Without an internship, you will be considered a medical graduate but not a doctor, as you will need the internship to get the license to practice medicine. Should you choose to do the internship elsewhere (e.g. back in Singapore) you'll be treated as any foreign trained doctor when you return to Australia, even though you studied medicine in Australia.

You should also know that currently the government is unwilling to fund international students (we are known as "cash cows") for internships and are playing politics with the health system. Although some student representatives have been bargaining for more internship places, the ministers cannot really be bothered with international students, and there is no telling what the result might be.

Have a read of these articles and websites.
Raising Awareness of the Intern Crisis and Medical Training Shortages - #interncrisis - Medical Student Action on Training -------see section on "Be Informed"

Internships are not a privilege to be sold

From an international medical student to the health minister - On Line Opinion - 26/10/2012

If you don't intend to stay in Australia, then this situation probably would not affect you. But those who want an option to stay or practise medicine overseas, I would suggest you think twice before coming to Australia. Many of us were not informed of the internship/licensing situation before making the decision to come here.

I know most of you would be excited coming to medical school, like how I was! But you should also consider what would happen after that. How would you go about getting a specialty training place in Singapore, especially when it's reserved mainly for local graduates? Perhaps you want to complete specialty training outside Singapore (possibly Australia) but how will you do that when there is a internship crisis in Australia? Many of you probably want to return home, but would your perspective change after 5-6 years in Australia?

There may be better options other than Australia (e.g. UK, Ireland, etc.) I would like to encourage you to consider and research carefully before taking this big step. I wish you all the best in fulfilling your aspirations.
