vinaphone now has D7 plan that costs 7000 dong and gives you 1.2Gb for 24 hours of use. you don't need unlimited data when you are vacationing. i was having a hard time to finish even 150mb per day.

I use D5 plan that cost 5000 dongs with 200MB of data per day. I can't even finish 200MB every day, especially it's 3g speed. I only use it for navigation and simple surfing. Everywhere have internet, really no need to get a lot of data.

Some of their cafes have very good WiFi. 50+ mbps !! 3g is good enough for simple usage. Nowadays the sim cards can only last 2 months. To extend it, you must make a call or top up. Otherwise will be dead after 2 months. New govt regulation I heard.

imho, their internet speed is better than singapore and malaysia. at tsn airport the free wifi speed was well above 150.

just make a charged transaction like sending sms and the expiry date will be pushed forward 60 days. you can keep your prepaid sim alive forever.

better than Singapore, for StarHub, you have to make a new top-up every 6 months otherwise your prepaid sim will be dead (that's the only way)

of course sending an sms is a lot cheaper than making a top-up

if you top-up $6, only extend validity by 60 days
top-up $10, extend validity for 120 days

if want to extend validity for 180 days, have to top-up at least $17
which would add up to $34 per year

singapore's 180 day validity is pretty similar to many developed places in asia, such as hk and taiwan. besides, you can extend it by deducting some of your credit balance.

wait till you go to malaysia and indonesia :)

anyway, i was quite impressed by viet nam. a communist country like viet nam can be so pro-consumer :)

Saigon and the south have always been capitalist until Hanoi started to rob and steal in every possible way :s22:

I suggest spending 3 days in Hoi An. It's a really laid back charming old town and of course the main purpose is to really chill there. There are so many nice cafe, pubs, restaurants to enjoy or just wander around exploring the lives of the locals. Hoi An has the nicest food in Vietnam - exemplary of the delicate cuisine from the Nguyen dynasty (the last ruling dynasty). Btw upon arriving u might find Hoi an just another Penang perhaps but spending more time there u will be surprised by the intricate yet sophisticated fusion of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese cultures there

Thank you! I will do a bit more research to plan a propery itinerary. Have wanted to go diving too so don't really have a lot of time. But appreciate the advice! :)
