Do you all get a local number to use for uber and grab? If the drivers don't speak english, how do you answer them when they call you?
Just came from Saigon. Used grab and uber more than dozen times in 24h and did not purchase SIM card there. At all cafes/restaurants/hotels there is wifi available and you can connect to theirs.

When booking Uber/grab don't blindingly relay on 'my location', but rather type the place you actually are at 'from'. This will minimize confusion because in 90% of cases phone's GPS showing location across the street.

Also, before picking up the app for the ride, check prices via Google Maps. DO NOT open the map, key in your destination, close and re-open it to repeat. Doing so will increase your ride price -both Uber and Grab do this, while checking prices at Google Maps does not.

when at night, you want to pay the taxi, have to open eyes big big ...
Above. No need for taxi when there is Uber/Grab. And all payment is directly charged to the card, no cash involved.

Lastly, what hotels do you all recommend? Budget less than $80 per night.
You did not say what was requirements for the hotel. We stayed at Happy Hotel 2 for less than half of your budget per night. For me nothing else was required except clean room and sheets, normal, not extra-firm mattress and low street noise environment.

The hotel fulfilled all these but because walls are paper thin (like in 90% of other properties) you could people walking in corridor/doors opening/etc. If this is deal breaker -then you need to spend considerable amount of time researching where to say - as I said - most properties are not soundproof.

Experience using Uber/Grab in Saigon (HCMC)

Decided to put a longer post here for everyone's benefit.

While I have been in Vietnam/Saigon more than once, it was the first I used Uber/Grab instead of taxis to get from port to point and I am totally satisfied. We used grab and uber more than ten times in 24h we (group of three adults) stayed in HCMC.

We got out together for sightseeing/dining/etc and entirely relied on Uber/Grab instead of public transport/taxi. While reading some bad reports here about uber/grab, the result for us worked way better than I expected.

Several conditions needs to be in place to make such experience successful - make sure that you have right expectations. Here is the list of observations:

1.Obviously, you need to have data connection on phone, but while desired, it is not absolutely necessary to have local SIM card with data. I did not purchase SIM card there and instead used wifi. At all cafes/restaurants/hotels there is wifi available and you can connect to them and use it to call Uber/Grab.

2. When booking Uber/grab, don't blindingly trust on 'my location' the app will show on map, but rather type the place you actually are at the 'from' field and make sure that app displays it correctly. This will minimize potential confusion because for example in 90% of cases my phone's GPS showing location across the street.

3. When picking up the car at the airport, pay close attention near which pillar you are (at least Uber will ask you to choose the one you will be waiting) so the car can come there, but if you see on the map that car has stopped and waiting at other pillar, just go there - do not expect that they will come to your location because, as said above, your GPS might not showing correct location.

4. Take approximate time of arrival of the car and further travel time with grain of salt. Especially it is the case for evening rush hour time. If app shows 5 min arrival time and car in 4 busy intersections away where green light is on just for 45 sec, instead it will be 15 min or more. Plan accordingly.

5. Before picking up the app/means (uber or grab) for the ride, check prices via Google Maps. DO NOT do the following: open the app, key in your destination, check the price and if you don't like it - close and re-open it to repeat. Doing so will increase your ride price - both Uber and Grab do this because they know that you've already checked the price for the destination. Instead you can check prices for both apps via Google Maps without getting punished.

6. Grab has slightly more number of cars available and prices are less for the ride when there is no surge pricing. However when surge pricing is in place things can change drastically. At one case Grab was showing me trip price as 80K VND while Uber - 55K. The same trip without surge pricing was 40K on Grab and 45K on Uber.

Overall, quite a positive experience. Just counted - all rides on uber/grab came as 465K, including rides to/from the airport (73K from and 89K - return to the hotel at District 10), appx 40K per ride. And I did not need to deal with explanation where to go, give money, count change, be concerned being cheated, etc.

Just go HCM and book one day earlier, there are many travel agents, can also ask hotel but may be a little pricey.

I can’t because it’s Xmas, I have to be in the city to soak up the fun on eve and actual Xmas (don’t want to party all night and rush to Mekong in a drunken state). And partly because I will be arriving at my hotel after 5pm, so I had to book the tour online first.

I've a Viettel SIM card from my previous trip, wonder if there's any way to reactivate it and top it up? Guess it might be cheaper then getting a new one from the airport?

Thanks bro. That brings me back to my post a few pages ago asking why sinhtourist cost $85sgd but another agency quoted me $25USD. Such huge difference with the same itinerary.

That I'm not sure. Perhaps it's the cost of accommodation. I went for day trip costing $12 only.

If you need to ask this, that means you're not familiar with the place. Then my advice is to stay in D1 since whatever you need or may need are readily available. For example, if you want to take a walk, you can go to Ben Thanh market. If you want to see night scenery, Bitexco is nearby. If you're in the mood for clubbing, there are lots of party places there, including hard rocks. Lots of foreigners there so language is not an issue.

If you're in the mood for a bit of adventure, can stay further away from D1, like D3,5 or Binh Thanh. Chinatown is in D5 by the way.

For me, i stay in Tan Binh. It is just 10 mins from the airport. I stayed next to a local market so i can buy necessities and food easily.

A proper store or shop should be able to help you.
But you will encounter language problems. The shop might not help you to set up the data plan properly.

I bought mine in a local market stall. Took a bit of struggle to set up the data as they sell sim cards with only calling capabilities.
