Sim card recommendations for hanoi sapa and halong bay anyone?

Sent from dark side of the moon using GAGT
I just back from hanoi, sapa, hlb. I can only say mobifone has limited coveraged in hlb when cruise went out. I was switched to vinaphone roaming connection. Likewise on sleeper train to sapa, my mobifone went to vinaphone. Sapa trekking i get E connection instead of 3G most of the time. So i think get vinaphone more coverage

Thanks for the info! Anyway just to check, would you recommend the overnight train over the bus? The price different is quite alot!

Hi
Any solo traveller did Halong Bay before? There are so many cruise operators, real headache to choose. Single rooms are so much more expensive. Any recommendation for 2D1N? Need pre-book? If paid but cruise cancelled due to weather, any refund?

Thanks for advice.

Never buy online, prices are almost 2x than street price. Have a flexible itinerary and buy when you're in Hanoi. Price for 2d1n are as follows:

38, 68, 85, 115 in usd.

I took the usd85 and it was pretty decent, single room need to pay $20 supplement but u can opt to share, I did but my cruise was not full so I had the entire room to myself.

Never buy from hotels, if you buy from someone who needs to call someone else, you can get cheaper. If they want to charge 10% tax, walk away. If they use sales tactic, walk away.

I think 65 and above is pretty decent already unless you are very fussy.

Don't jinx yourself by thinking about bad weather, its pretty standard, you get 50% refund only.

I signed up for tour with my hotel. Didnt try bus so can comment much. Overnight train replace 1 night at hotel so you need factor in.

I only spent 1.5days at hanoi. Just explore the old quarters, try the egg coffee, i ate tasty ban cha which is their grilled pork with vermicelli. Eat their pho. Weekend there is night market. And their beer street is totally packed at night. If you cultural can go visit their Museum.

My sapa tour is treking and homestay. I was there may 2 and 3. First day weather very shiok. Cooling and trekking dont feel hot at all. But the second day trekking was damn hot. If ya doing trekking better hot than wet. Cause the path can be bbqwtf when wet. No joke slipping and sliding down the edge with no return. Lol

Anyone here have gone on a 1 month backpacking adventure from Saigon to Hanoi? Would not want to rent a scooter there due to the chaotic traffic. What's the estimated budget I would need for such a trip? $3k sufficient for everything? Going on a solo trip
Would love to do so. Vietnam is addictive right? You just came back from hcm then now want to go back again.

Saw there are 2 different places different cruises go :
- Halong Bay, the touristy part
- Bai Tu Long, the less touristy part

Which is more recommended? Really confused with so many cruise operators. Maybe go there then book, since also pretty concerned about weather since understand June starts to be rainy season.

Thanks.

I'm in the same trip right now and I tell you what my biggest lessons are:

1) Always use Uber/Grab
2) If there's a price, you can find cheaper
3) You are almost guaranteed to be ripped off one way or another
4) Just cross the road
5) Never commit to an itinerary, I regret purchasing my domestic flights else I could have done so much more.

If you are travelling in a pair or more, biking is good else you can just take the bus, most small towns have bike rentals so you can take day trips easily.

Vietnam is a beautiful country and the people are very nice, except when they try to sell you something.

There are many types of hostel, the most common ones are party hostels and often the cheapest - my take is, pay a few dollars more for a communal hostel - the people you meet there have more substance.

People in party hostels generally have no directions in life, just want free beer and sex, get wasted and wake up the next day at 3pm for more free beers.

Don't worry about travelling alone, you will meet many fellow solo travellers.

Thnx for the tips bro. Indeed I met and chatted with so many fellow tourists and locals when I was in Saigon! Don't mind if I ask, how long is your trip to Vietnam? What were your routes/cities you visited? Also how much did you budgeted for the trip all-in? I'm planning a 1 month solo backpacking trip south to North Vietnam next feb/march/April so I'm scouting for things to do and places to visit :)

I'm assuming thats the 3d2n with stay in cat ba island? 115USD is just 2d1n with something like bhaya cruise or a class. Anyway, for halong bay, 3* is enough already, everything else is overpaying. Since about $350 can get you a decent cruise in SG. And most of the cruise at halong bay is nothing to write home about. Btw, most cruise itinerary are the same.

Thats correct, some budget cruise will park overnight in a crowded location some wont. It depends. The difference of going to Halong Bay and Bai tu long, depends on you. Its like saying you went to london or paris, one is slightly less touristy than the other. Eitherway both are touristy, you will still overpay and you will have people peddling you overpriced snacks from sampans.

That said, halong bay is a UNESCO site.
