Hey guys,

I'll be going to Hanoi for holiday soon. Would changing SGD 50 per day worth of VND be sufficient? Say won't be buying too much stuff and just eating normal food (maybe 1 times good meal at 4P Pizza).

Thanks!

That's around 850k vnd. Enough to just eat and buy simple stuff and take grab within the city. Definite not enough if you include hotel fees.

Good street food in Hanoi costs 40-70k vnd not including drinks. Coffee/tea - 20-35k. SGD $50 will be more than enough to eat three times and go to museums/activities and use Grab.

hot toc has 2 different references. one just simply, as the name translates to, is a hair salon. the hair salon typically provides other services such as dig ear or facial, wash hair, etc.

the other one.... like bro Henabi suggested, u need to go other forum to find out more about. this one friendly forum.

How about USD? Haha

a lot of ppl have been saying that USD is widely accepted in Vietnam. I think more so in the past and perhaps in touristy areas, example tour guide tips, or buy some souvenir at a rest stop on the way to halong bay, etc.

but in current circumstances, people usually just accept VND. all the malls just accept VND, not USD.

so in conclusion, I wouldn't bring USD. unless u have leftover USD that u kept. otherwise, just change a sum of VND, and bring spare SGD just in case. if u feel that $50 a day is too much, then u change less and bring more spare SGD.

USD in Vietnam afaik only got use in their casinos and for emergency

Otherwise than that.... Use VND.

It's already 2020 but yet the general public understanding of Vietnam is still stuck in the 80s

What's worse Is that some travel agencies (no names mention) are STILL telling their customers that USD is widely used in Vietnam

*Face palm*

The days when USD is widely accepted in Vietnam are in the past. This is different from the situation in Cambodia or Laos, where USD is still widely accepted in tourism and you will not get a bad deal when you pay in USD.

I got from Luang Prabang last week. In terms of Laos and LB particularly, if you use USD you will get poor deal - they will recalculate kip prices in USD using quite bad exchange rate.

On other hand, if you take USD and exchange it at money exchange you will get a better exchange rate than thru ATM/interbank exchange rate. When I was there, interbank exchange rate was 8850 kip for USD and on street you could get 9120 kips for $100/$50 bills, 9100 for $20/$10 bills and 8850 for $1/$5 bills. So using USD you actually could get 2% more kips on your hand than using ATM (and paying ATM fee for withdrawal).

In Vietnam you won't get such a good deal with USD.

How much time will you have on shore? In your case, I am not sure if you need USD cash on board the cruise ship, in which case you can simply exchange the USD for VND on shore. Try to expend what VND you have before you leave.
