There will be 1-2 days with no plans, so maybe just slack around at the cafe or saloon. Btw is it easy to pickup any local girl at the cafe without knowing how to speak vietnamese? :look:

i am planning a short trip too with wife...

any advice if i shd go DIY or shd i plan it out with a tour agency?

I am concerned abt safety since wife is ard, so as such currently inclined towards tour agency..but donoe how much would it roughly cost...

would 3 days 2 nites suffice in HCM?

Actually best if i can go both HCM and Hanoi...

btw where to change viet dong in Singapore to get good forex rates?

change at the airport counters or at money changers in downtown area. 4D3N is good enough for HCM City but not enough for both Hanoi and HCM.

I can help you with the hotel accomodation if u want. HCM City is relatively safe, even safer than Johore.. ;)

Hey guys, just booked flight by Tiger. I'll be backpacking for ten days and traveling in big group(7 of us) and i want to make this an enjoyable one. Have been planning(rather still surface) to travel from Hanoi to Halong and to Sapa. Heard about heli ride to Halong and train express to Sapa. Is it recommended to travel in that manner? Is there a better and more interesting place worth the visit? I would be grateful if anyone could suggest me, routes to take, hostel/hotel to stay, do's and don'ts.

I'm considering renting a scooter, or car while in Hanoi. I do not have a motorcycle license though i do carry a class 3 license, is it still possible to bike on the road? Since language might be a barrier, is there any agency that supplies tour guide(must be fun people to be with). Or better don't?

er.. i thought backpacking was meant as a mean of budget travel...and heli transfer to halong from hanoi aren;t cheap..although its a nice experience. travelling to sapa from hanoi is via train after which you will need another transfer by land to uphill area.

you will need to convert your liscence to international liscense and then translate it to vietnamese language to get proper documents to drive legally in vietnam road. having a class 3 Singapore Liscense does not entitle you to drive a car on the road in Vietnam. On paper, its illegal and will put you/your companions in discomfort if u happen to get stopped by the traffic wardens.

Roads on Vietnam is by no means anywhere similar to Singapore or other roads, if u do not have experience, its better not to drive for first time visitors because - you are not familar with the road signs, or the location and the overwhelming mototcycles on the road during heavy traffic hours will only serve to delay your transporation from one location to another. better just hop on a join in tour bus or something. ;)

just went to check out the land package tour for HCM.

5D 4N, fully guided
Cheapest was S$408 per pax (excluding air ticket)
hotel in District 1, 3 star-hotel: Elios or Vien Dong or Le Duy
all meals provided except 1st and last day

itin:

day 01- tour guide pick up, followed by F&E
day 02- Cu Chi (AM), Vung Tau tour(PM)- Tian Hou temple
and stay overnite in Vung Tau
day 03- Vung Tau tour - jesus monument, then go back to HCM to visit Notre Dame Cathedral, Centre POst Office, City Hall
day 04- My Tho tour - vinh trang pagado, mekong river, ben thanh market
day 05- F&E, airport transfer to airport

1) Is the price worth the itin provided? or at least reasonable?

2) In terms of location, which of the 3 hotels quoted is the most convenient for shopping, as well as hotel cleanliness/ services/ classiness?

3) For NOv travel, woudl the weather be bitterly cold, and would any of the river-related activities be affected by monsoon season?

thanks

Note: I know F&E can allow me to see more things, but i am jsut concerned abt safety and language.

The cathedral and centre post office, city hall all quite close to each other. being cathedral is like within 10mins walk to post office.
ben thanh market is like sg pasar malan, hk's lady street. all the things is cater for tourist.. treat us like robert head. but 1 thing nice over there is they hv those seafood stalls SUPER NICE N CHEAP!! (only open @ nite)

hmm my fren adviced me to go ben thanh market to change is the best rate.
During my 6days stay over there. I exchange $ from all over the places except ben thanh market (cos i dont know exactly is where)

Please dont change @ hotel or tour agency. worst rate (~10500+-). Go bank or those Money changer is better (~11000)
