frankly, about the whole halong bay thingy, very impt is to go with a good tour.
mine was good. i did a 3days 2night thingy.
on the 1st night i slept on the "boat". 2nd night was at cat be island. on the 2nd day,kayak in the morning followed by lunch. lunch was awesome as they dock on some secluded island and had lunch there. followed by a hiking at some hill (the hike i would say not for those who just want to relax)

was talking to another one of my friend and he did it with a tour. felt really cheated as whatever he paid did not justify the food.

Seems like there's no one carrier to take care of the entire trip. Not for budget airlines it seems.

you may wish to check out vietnam airlines too. I was lucky and i booked a domestic (hcm to hanoi) with them and it cost roughly about the price of the train down!
they fly to hcm and hanoi pretty frequently.

Can I just use Vietnam Dong and no USD at all in HCMC? What about the taxi ride from airport to my hotel, can I pay in Dong instead of USD?

expense like food, shopping, taxi fare you can use dong but for tour and hotel charge , better bring some USD.

I stayed in Bamboo Resort previously, really nice, especially the bathroom, you feel like you are Tarzan & Jane ! haha

Some sandy cones over there is great, bring a good camera with you. But strong wind will may cause some dusts in your lens so be careful.
