Greetings to everyone! I'm planning to make a switch to ultra wide monitors after Chinese new year. Looking at the 29 inch LG curved monitor or a dual 25 inch, also by LG (though I really dislike the base).

I would like to know, from users, how does it feels like gaming on these monitors? Does it affect frame rates compared to a standard 1920 x 1080? Also, as my budget only allow for 2560 x1080, will ppl recommend these ultra wide over a 1440p monitor? Which is better for an immersive gameplay experience?

Many thanks in advance :Df

Bad for watching movies which have mostly been in 16:9 1920x1080 format.

Ultrawide HD (2560x1080) pushes ~33.3% more pixels to 1080p, so it demands slightly more but not that much and you'll probably have no issues driving this res with your current gpu. In terms of gaming, you will have a wider horizontal field of view which looks great especially in genres like first person shooters.

Ideally, 1440p will be better in terms of overall experience but require better hardware to push all the pixels (not sure how the r9 390 performs on 1440p though) and the panels generally costs more. However if you're content with gaming at full HD, the 2560x1080 will be a nice little upgrade. I went through this route (2560x1080) so that I can still game in high settings with my current hardware without having to upgrade. :)

I tried look at it at SLS.... comparing it with 32" Standard Monitor. In the end I go with the 32" Monitor instead of the 34" UltraWide Monitor. :o

oh i see.. damn! was personally impressed by one post on showing the purchases with the 2560 x 1080 playing blu ray Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe i should stick with my current monitor for movies and gaming wise with the ultra wide then?

Think that when i was building my rig in the past i saw that R9 390 supposedly have improved 1440p capabilities, but earlier on when i was researching on its performance on games looks like its staggering between 30-48 fps :(. How would you describe the extra Field of View from ultra wide? better?

My 29 inch also set at 1920x1080 only , because if 2560 x 1080 my youtube and movie will have black bar at side

Oh, sounds like quite a trouble to be getting Ultra Wide monitors then . Apart from that, any other qualms do you have facing the monitors? Maybe i'll still hook up my 24 inch for movies and such, or can i toggle between preset ratios between gaming and watching movies?

Actually, we went a long way from Analog monitor to eventually finally a standard called 1080p for both the media as well as the monitor screen. Learning from that, I will suggest to upgrade to the next standard resolution(maybe like 4k) only when 4k bluerays became mainstream and the monitor should go 4k also. Just like our status quo of 1080p medias & 1080p monitor now.

If you run a higher resolution monitor at 1080p, it will mean some pixels may not have a pixel to pixel matching to the media being played and result in jaggedness or whatever you call it, I don't know the name.

So, I think better buy 4k monitors only when 4k bluerays became mainstream.

For youtube there is a small workaround on chrome to get rid of the black bars (essentially zoomed in). You may want to check it out: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ultrawide-video/lngfncacljheahfpahadgipefkbagpdl?hl=en

These are really great advice. Thanks so much for your input!

I've seen it! Thanks for the inclusion of the comparison. It does look better than the 16:9.. Compared to a 16:9 monitor, what are your opinions on the game immersiveness on 21:9?

Imho, i dont fancy 21:9 if im watching movies.

Using dell and samsung curved 1440p ultrawide. It is good for productivity, good for more viewing. But when it comes to movie format, it is a total put off.

Most movies are sill at 1080p. Im currently using 32inch 1440p instead, and im pretty happy that some bluray are able to make it full screen.

For me personally I am not particularly mindful of the black bars at the side

Now looking around to see how much the LG one costs

I game, watch movie n work on my 34" samsung. Loving it.

The extra real estate allows me to open multiple spreadsheets while have a reasonably size window for movie while working.

Would love to try a 34" 21:9 monitor some day. For now I'll just be happy with my 40" 2160p monitor :D

Personally I feel that 21:9 monitors are primarily targeted for productivity users. It is suited for people who need a lot of real estate for work and productivity. And saves on table space as opposed to using 2 monitors.

I feel it's not suited for movies and even gaming for that matter. I prefer the more standard 1080p/1440p/2160p format aka 16:9 because games and movies have been optimized for that aspect ratios for so long. Going to 21:9 you will inevitably face problems and technical issues and that aspect ratio is still very new.

2ndly, now if you go for 1440p you can opt for higher refresh rate monitors or G Sync/Freesync which is more immersive for gaming with high fps if your graphic card is capable enough. I feel that is more important for gaming than 21:9 aspect ratio.

Just my humble 2c.

2k(price) monitor?

21:9 btw is not a common standard for movies...only some movies had such cuts

fyi

Precisely. Not meant to watch bluray movies unless there is a few movies you wanna watch.

32inch 1440p to me is suitable for my use. Unless i go for 16:9 monitor 4k when 4k bluray is out. I find the price $999 is worthwhile till date.

The only downside are YouTube ba , the rest are good for me because usually video player can scratch full screen even is 16.9 format. Gaming in 21.9 is great except for dota

My previous owned monitors

Dell U3415W..... great 34" 21:9 but no gsync .... gaming is great and working with multiple windows.

Philips 4k 40'... stunning 40" screen with 4K resolution but didnt have G-sync and suffer from tearing etc..

Now back to 21:9 34" with gsync and 100hz.. it's as close to my ideal monitor...
Make no mistake... for the last 2-3 years, most AAA games support widescreen except the irritating EA who die die refuse to do fifa 3440 by 1440 for 34".

I personally find gaming on 21:9 is more 'immersive' than 16:9 (previously was using 27" 16:9). It gives a more cinematic feel whether you are gaming or watching movies. As for compatibility issues, not all content might play nicely with this aspect ratio out of the box, but there are some workarounds if you are ok with it. Also another thing you might want to take note is that 21:9 monitors are generally shorter in physical height compared to its 16:9 counterparts.
