Vintage watch Thread

Hi All,

I don't see many people talking about vintage watches or watches in general, other than those that likes to copy+paste other people's "Rolex" watches and claim it as theirs.

Anyway, thought I'll start a thread on Vintage watches, as I've recently been bitten by the watch collecting bug.

I'm in no way an expert in horology, I just like looking at watches, back when I was younger I usually buy fake watches (yes those copy watches from night markets) from Thailand/Hong Kong etc. I still own one, a particular Patek Philippe, which sometimes I wear to fancy events but I have no interest in. Got people even tell me the watch is nice, then I'll just straight up tell them it's a fake, bought for $50 or something. They are usually quite surprised. I still have to google and watch Youtube videos for information on the watches I find. But I really like vintage watches.

Anyway, at the moment I have only 1 "VINTAGE" watch, the rest of my current collection are either retro design (Casio watches) or newer design watches or from good manufacturers but are not so famous. I am looking to purchase more watches, I'm eyeing an Omega Geneve and also a Bulova Moon watch, but the moon watch is hard to get at a good price. Also a Vostok Komandirskie I bought from Ebay got lost in transit, but it's less than $50, so I take it as lesson learnt when buying things from Ukraine.

Anyway, here's my Vintage Seiko Chronograph, supposed to be from the 70s.

PS: I don't buy watches that are over S$1,000. I'm not made of money and my dad's not printing any for me to spend. But I just think many Singaporeans are too obsessed with watches as a "status" symbol, but I think there are many quality watches below the S$1,000 range, heck even the S$200 range also have. In fact, majority of my watches are less than S$200. And I love all of them, some I wear everyday. But I'm more into Quartz and manual wind watches now, as I find Automatic watches too troublesome to keep wound.

I find the idea of "Spending over a grand" to pass down to next gen a fallacy.

I look at watches as a technological device, a mechanical marvel. I personally think anything below $1,000 can be as marvelous as a $100,000 watch.

But of course, each to his own.

Having said that, if I am going to spend money, I'll go for a 'A Lange and Sohn'.

Very nice dial design for a 1960s watch. Seiko really is ahead of its time. But then again they are also very good at copying other brand watches. But this is nice. I think nicer than mine. lol

And I paid almost S$250 for mine.

there is a Watch Thread with thousands of replies, and a few of them inside collect nothing but vintage watches and they are real experts in those fields (which as you probably know, its a field which require lots of prior research).

Maybe I missed it but 90% of watches discussed there are new or less than 20 years old popular/run of the mill models... Not exactly what ts is looking for

haha the same people who likely commenting in this thread will also likely be commenting there already.

but its ok, just a suggestion cause i was wondering if TS might be looking for some specific info.

wont be long before a "below 1k watch", "dress watch", "diver watch", "solar watch" threads all appear

Hi all,

I just wanted to find out if anyone knows what the estimated cost of servicing a vintage full gold Rolex Day-Date from the 1960-1970s? (See the link for the photo of the watch)

The condition of the watch is pretty bad as he has not worn it for quite a bit and the watch dial has some oxidization (Movement has not moved for at least 5 years as the watch has been sitting inside a safety deposit box for quite some time.)

I'm hoping to change the dial and service the watch at the Rolex Service Centre. I am expecting it to set me back maybe 1k for servicing and another 1k for the dial or is that an underestimation for a gold day-date?

Also, considering that Rolex Service Centre might not take it in, does anyone know any reputable watch repair shops that handle vintage Rolex watches?
