Hello big brothers and sisters! I'll be visiting Taiwan for the first time alone come this december (30 Nov - 10 Dec), thus i'll need some valuable tips and advice from you all!

I'm hoping to visit some scenic places and indulge in awesome food. I'm a fan of hotsprings as well! So far I've shortlisted Taroko Gorge, Hualien, Taichung, Taipei as places that I'll be visiting. Since I'm travelling alone, taxi services for visiting outlying areas are out of the question due to costs. Any suggestion on where and how I can plan for my trip?

Thank you in advance!! :s12::s12:

If you are going as a group of 3 to 4 pax, is better to rent a cab. the driver can bring u around.
is advisable to book taipei cab driver and taichung cab driver separately ....

for taipei :
jiufen, shifen, jgs, nanya , yeliu, keelung,
taipei 101, dan shuei, raohe, shilin, xmd, tms , xinbeitou, wulai, yms
zoo, window on china theme park, leofoo theme park
for taichung:
sml, cingjing, yi zhong, fengjia nm, gao mei, etc

then bo bian u have to take public transport ba ...
just note the time taken to travel from tms to ruifang is already 1 hrs
ruifang to jiufen is another 20min or so ...
so one way is already 1hr 20min exclude waiting time, and not including shifen

Taroko Gorge, Hualien quite impossible without taxi service. You will do fine in tpe and taichung and maybe khh. (not sure if miaoli or tainan need private transport though

So far in my preliminary stages of planning my itinerary, I'll be visiting only Taipei and Hualien because I don't want my holiday trip to feel too rushed.

I'll be visiting Taroko Gorge as a day trip from Hualien. I think that there are public buses that run from Hualien to the Gorge, so taxis aren't necessary right? Besides, I'll probably consult the hotel staff on where to join a group tour once I reach Hualien as well if necessary..

How come it's impossible to navigate around Hualien without taxi btw? :s11: I'll be spending about 4 nights in Hualien, so are there any other places that you will strongly recommend me to visit? :s11:

There is public bus from hualien to taroko gorge, but the frequency is very low. You miss a bus, you probably have to wait an hr++. Not sure what are the location the public bus stop though.

You can look at the attractions you want to visit at hualien, and you will realize other than those in the town area, most of them do not have public transport that stop any where near them. Even when i travel between the town area and ziqiang nm and my minsu I also call cab.

Taipei I suppose no problem la. Ease of transport and food and whatnot. Saw that you mentioned you like hot springs, perhaps can slot in a day or two in YiLan(JiaoXi) before heading to Hualien? Can take bus from Taipei Bus Station(level 4 iirc), bus provider company to YiLan is called Kamalan. Enjoy your trip irregardless!

1st timer is better to spend more time in Taipei instead.. I think 1 or 2 person travel is easier then traveling in a group.. I rem 2 yrs back when I went Hualian with my wife we stay about 2 nights there.. Regarding 太鲁阁 actually some hotels provide 1 or half day bus trip with guided tour and they provide simple lunch too if u don't mind..
