Hate it when vmware only allows gpu virtualization with nvidia k2, k3 graphics card.. which is out of reach for most home labs..

Isn't that due to nvidia deliberately gimping their cards to not work with PCI passthrough? under KVM you can prevent the OS from knowing its a VM. Not sure if it ESXI has that feature

Never had any luck with any form of passthrough in KVM.

Just curious, what exactly is your use case for this server? video editing? i didnt quite get it in your previous post.

Primarily it's a media encoding server, I think there is a function to move davinci resolve encodes to a dedicated server instead of running on their laptops. Either that or it's being used as a remote desktop.

Secondary functions including a VPN server for remote access, PleX (media server) ,pihole (telemetry and ads blocking), samba server & nextcloud (network shares).

Will probably add other more in the future

Interesting! can you share the current specs and price of that server/workstation that you bought? I'm also looking to set up something like this for homelab purposes.

Depending on you use case, you may get away with running something lower powered.

I personally use a old dell pc (i5-2400, 8gb ram)
It seems to run 5+VMs while still using under 6gb ram.

How much RAM did you assign your VMs?

I have four Windows Server 2012 R2 (trial license) VMs and they gobbled up all the 16GB my little box had.

I set it as 40gb for each windows VM. I think the ballooning drivers prevents the VM from running out even while I technically overprovisoned RAM
