You are right that there can be different interpretations of spoilt votes. This is where the officers there in the presence of all the candidates have to make a judgement call.

From what I know, any visible form of marking entirely within a box is considered a vote to that party. The size and its content is irrelevant.

Hence, the surest way I know of to void a vote is to make visible markings on two boxes.

But the lead officer at the voting station has final decision over such matters... if it's a spoil vote that's leaning towards MIW, he can still consider it as a valid vote...

The lead counting officer does have a say so the observer must really make a big hoohaa if they feel it is unfair. Most importantly though, is to educate sinkies on voting correctly, as in where to mark and if wanna void have to void decisively.
