Hi,

totally a hardware noob and hence, seeking the advise of the experts here. I understand the upcoming Skylake processors will be out soon so the biggest question on my mind is, to wait or buy the current batch of processors?

Also, would like to seek further advice on the specs for a DIY desktop. i am currently using a 4 years old laptop and have realized that mobility is not really a requirement for me. For now, i am more price conscious (budget of ard 1.2-1.5k for the desktop alone) and would probably be nice to have some future growth possibility.

My usage:
- web browsing on Firefox with lots of add-ons (a few 4k videos and also 20+ tabs to open and load simultaneously, some of which are image intensive)
- gaming (preferably Project Cars at minimum medium/high settings)
- trading platform and programs
- torrenting
- watching videos

I will reuse:
- 1x Intel 530 Series Solid State Drive 240GB
- 1x Intel 530 Solid State Drive Retail Kit 120gb
- Windows 7 Home License

Any advice/comments are welcome.

Thanks.

Definitely wait for Skylake. Less than a month it will be out. Then you have more choices and also lower prices even if you decide to go for the older processors.

ok then maybe i shd rephrase. if i were to base it on current hardware, wat would likely be able to meet my usage requirements?

i totally understand wat i am asking is noobish or retarded even but would definitely welcome any comments apart from "wait la wait la wait til ........" :s13:

Why wait:

-Ddr4 will be cheaper common place after skylake/ddr3 soon to be obsolete when stocks of haswell/pre haswell CPUs eols
-m.2 galore
-many pcie lanes/pcie storage galore

Why don't wait:
-dropping ddr3 prices (on amazon)
-ddr4 not much gains over ddr3
- pcie capabilities not saturated as of yet.
-m.2 no advantage over sata 3 as of now (
-skylake little improvement over haswell

Sent from microwave oven using GAGT

IMO, your usage requirements are not high, any of the i5/i7 recommendations should meet easily? Look at previous threads with the same budget, here's one example: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/h...k-~-$1-3k-budget-gaming-pc-build-5096057.html.

At most bump the ram up to 16gb if there's budget left since you're reusing SSDs.

No harm waiting to see and evaluate Intel Skylake performance but DDR4 is currently pretty much out of reach for your budget and needs:

This build offers you growth possibility in terms of RAM and HDD capacity. CPU overclocking is pretty much unneeded these days as performance advantage really not significant compared to he amount of money spent on it.

CPU+MB: Intel Core i5-4460 + ASRock B85M Pro4 @ $327
RAM: Crucial DDR3-1600 CL11 8GB X2 @ $134
GPU: MSI GTX 970 4GB OC @ $485
AMD cards currently CMI for Project CARS.
HDD: HGST Deskstar NAS 3TB @ $179*** (Lazada Singapore)
ODD: Samsung 24X CD/DVD Writer [OEM] @ $21
PSU: FSP Aurum S 500W [80 Plus Gold] @ $89
CASE: Sharkoon T28 @ $73

Total: $1308

Buy others from Tradepac, #05-18.

***Wait for upcoming Lazada discount coupons for massive savings

hi bros, jus an update on the final build i got so far...

MB+CPU - ASRock Fatal1ty B85 Killer + Intel Core i5-4460
RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3-1866 CL10 16GB Dual Channel Kit
GPU - MSI GTX 970 4GB OC Express
HDD1 - Intel 530 Series Solid State Drive 120GB
HDD2 - Toshiba 5TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm, 128MB Cache, 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (PH3500U-1I72)
PSU - FSP Aurum S 500W [80 Plus Gold]
CASE - Fractal Design R5 Blackout Edition
DSP - DELL UltraSharp U2414H

not the 'final' product as missing HDD2 & RAM (on the way from amazon) and borrowed the RAM from my brother's computer just to test the components...

i also need help for the following questions while completing the assembly followed by a bootup test... did not test further as had to return the RAM... sorry i really noob..

1. is the red fuzzy/flickering background normal upon initial bootup and connecting via the GPU's HDMI port? or is there a component failure or something? haven't even began to install windows etc.

HnJEspB.jpg

2. what kind of display cable to get to connect Dell U2414H to my desktop? connect from GPU or from MB?

3. if i have a soundbar, i presume i can use it like a speaker but what cables to link the desktop to it?

4. any comments on the cable management? this is the first time i am trying and would appreciate any advice.

thanks.
