Warning to everybody: if you are going on a beach, DO CHECK if box jellyfish is in the area, otherwise you (or your kids) might end up dead.

A family went to have good time at one of Bintan resorts, 6 y/o boy got stung by the box jellyfish and went into coma. Fortunately his father was nearby and managed to get boy out of the water and administer CPR and that saved him.

Resort had absolutely nothing to deal with this kind of emergency - even a vinegar (not talking about oxygen) - it took them 6 hours to get boy from Bintan to Singapore for emergency treatment. And if you are at some remote sites remember that evacuation might (will) not be an option.

In Philippines alone every year about 40 people die from box jellyfish stings.

Don't be in that statistic.

Years ago I visited one of the Bintan resorts and also encountered a lot of jellyfish in the waters.

Good information. I went to Bintan before but never to the beach. Din know the water is infested with Jellyfish. From the thread it seemed it is Box Jellyfish infesting the water in Bintan. Will bring vinegar there if going to the beach there.

Just to say jellyfish is a common problem in this region, so long as it is open waters.

Has been stung back in 2005 Aug on a trip in Bintan, felt stinging pain. Moving forward abit, it felt even more, then i move back to the shore.

If no vinegar, the next thing is to pee over it. Well, if it's over your own wound... I am sure you will not mind.

The wound, will feel like loads of mossies bite. It subsided after a few hours. Not as serious as i need any medical attention though. Since there is a pool in most resorts, stick to the pool to play safe.
