For those visiting Bangkok over the long weekend or in future, you should visit Wat Pak Nam on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. It's near Talat Phlu BTS station.

It's a interesting place even for non Buddhist as there are also a lot of good food around there.

Have a look at AsiaDashi dot com.

Cheers

we used to stay at fang-thon before moving to rangsit. the previous apartment is not too far from wat paknam (pak = mouth, nam = water) hence i'd been there quite a handful of times. it's a small temple but embedded very deep into a winding soi. personally, i won't recommend this temple to ordinary travellers or tourists. as it needs great effort to navigate to the place and i'm not sure which part of temple you find it "interesting".

we last visited this temple in late jan or early feb. the upper floor praying hall was under renovation. the walkway, with solid wooden pillars, in the below pic is just about the only thing i find it interesting.

for the uninitiated, the founder of wat paknam discovered the dhammakaya meditation. he was instrumental in the formation of dhammakaya organization and also, the controversy (with due respect) wat dhammakaya (an UFO shape-like temple).

This wat is deep inside the soi. But once there u can walk on foot to nearby temples as well there is one with huge figures like haw par villa just across a bridge. In the vancintys have at least 3-4. U cqn also see the museum with the old cars that is causing so much problems in the news recently.

Do share abt the food recommendations. U cqn also take the chance to walk thru the narrow sois with the wooden housing for a look at thai life beyond the malls. Thonburi has much to offer

The Wat is a bit off the tracks hence better to go via taxi or boat.

It's worth a visit for those looking for something other than the regular shopping centers and modern buildings. To the point of the other member, I did see the vintage cars and they looked really classic.

Walking along the small alleys does bring a person back in time..probably all the way back to the 70s.

Cheers

for those who love the 1970 feel, i always recommend them to visit the sao ching cha (giant swing area). it's only a short 10 - 15 mins walk from khao san road so it is very accessible. there are also plenty of old fashion good eat along the way.

just walk along thanon dinsor opp KSR to sao chincha and wat suthat. don't miss out mont nom sod main branch (across city hall) along the way. the famous ghost gate phad thai is also nearby.
