That's exactly why we signed the SEZ JB plan which many dissed and said it was a bad idea.
Data centres don't create much jobs, they use crazy amount of electricity and water.
They are modern day pig sty. Malaysia was celebrating when they won those contracts but they are not smart enough to suspect why people let them take the job.
The SEZ's main initiative was to sell this idea of SG data centres but hosted in JB.
But after signing off, Joe Biden signed executive order to ban the hosting of proprietary AI overseas and chips restrictions.
Right now, USA is also bottleneck by power constrain and it's by a huge margin. The only solution is to port out these data centres to elsewhere. Look like Malaysia is out too, if they take it, their energy prices will likely increase sharply.
At the point before SEZ, Malaysia was having electricity surplus, not sure if it's still the same now.
Imagine we did not sign these SEZ and insist on hosting huge amount of data centres here in SG, we would have critical shortage. If Malaysia is hosting using China chips through some arrangement, even worse. China chips have very poor yield.
