Hi Alyeska, unless you going Hokkaido, most places on other major island should not experience snow yet in late Nov.

Any good pair of comfortable walking shoes should suffice as can expect lots of walking from huge train stations

Ah my concern was afraid of autumn being too cold where most shoes won't suffice. Got it.

Normal shoes good enough. In japan wear comfortable walking shoes because you will be doing lots of that.

Aye got it, what's a good pair of comfortable walking shoes would you guys recommend for someone who has flat feet and rather wide feet? I wear us shoe size 12/13 at least.

I'm going mid Nov till late Nov, and I'll just be wearing my trusty Asics sports shoes. I went Tokyo in Dec2016 with this pair of shoes too and there's no issues (except for the day I went Shirakawa-Go coz it suddenly snowed quite hard on the day we reached and we didn't expect it.) It won't be snowing in Nov though, so you'll be fine with a good pair of comfortable shoes.

Care to share which asics sports shoes you're wearing? :D

I got these. I am a US 9.5, UK 8.5 dress shoe size and I bought a size 9.5. Fits perfectly with winter socks.

The waterproofing is needed especially when you cross the streets where the ice and parts of pavements is all slushy i.e. ice at the top, water at the bottom. In those conditions, even with boots and soles with proper traction, you cannot walk with the normal gait and will have to lift your knees to avoid slipping and falling.

That is a very common brand in Hokkaido when I was there this year. My guide was also wearing Sorel boots when we were out to various locations in Obihiro.

The key is you live in Tokyo. Converse2010 might not have time or know where to shop for the winter shoes in Japan.

Converse2010, consider buying from Amazon, can get fantastic branded winter/hiking shoes for less than S$100. My whole family did that without any mistakes. Just read reviews carefully. Another option is to quickly buy from Decathlon NOW before all gets snapped up.
Main danger is not water proofing, it’s black ice that can cause serious damage when you slip. Crampons are not that comfortable frankly. Our fashionable winter boots saw us safely from ski resorts to the cities. Your SG sneakers will not protect you from the cold and after wearing those thick socks will be too cramp.
Thanks for the advise. Seems to confirm my doubt about normal sneakers to be worn during winter. :o

Mine is Gel-Nimbus 18. I believe I have mild flat foot but I haven't go get it properly checked. I know I confirm can't wear shoes that high archers can wear. My friend and I both bought a same pair of shoes in decathlon before- he had high arch and I don't, and he loved that pair to bits while I had to give it away after wearing it for 2 occasions...

Anyway what I do know is I had walked too much and the balls of my feet will get painful easily if the cushioning isn't enough. And I have wide feet too. Gel-Nimbus series is the only series in Asics (and all other brands) that can have the cushioning I need and fits my weird feet without going for customized shoes/insoles.

That's the issue that i'm upset about having wide flat feet is that shoes that are comfortable are usually just sportswear and they don't look nice when you're trying to do the smart or casual look. But thanks anyway, i'll look into them. I was told my a ortho specialist doctor that i need arch support shoes but they are often pretty expensive Q_Q
