Air or helium filled drive?

WD's air filled drives consistently run like 5 deg hotter than my helium filled drives. With an ambient temp of ~31 deg, the only way to lower HDD temps is to turn on the aircon.

I even tried running a 1500rpm 140mm fan at full speed aimed directly at the disks and only managed to bring the air filled drive to ~43 deg Celsius from 45 deg Celsius. Drives are at spinning idle.

Anyway temps below 50 deg Celsius is fine for HDD, sweet spot is around ~40 deg Celsius.

..... the only way to lower HDD temps is to turn on the aircon.

You can put the HDD to sleep when not in use. I use sleep after 20 minutes idle though you can set this to whatever suit your needs.

Gaming and my frequently used files are on SSDs so I only need to wake up the HDDs when necessary (a few seconds to spin up).

That's another way. I'm experimenting with letting this bunch of drives sitting at spinning idle to see if I can increase the lifespan of my drives.

Past few drives have been dying quite early at around the 10k to 20k drive hour mark

Running Air-filled WD Red Plus 24/7 with no spin down on my NAS as below:

Temp at 45-55. Am I worried? Nope.

Are there errors? Maybe 1 report every month on one of the quirky drive which always self recover. Am I worried? Nope.

I run ZFS though.

Under 50 Celsius is fine.
You should be more worried about it dying.
10TB of Data is not funny.
I hope you got at least RAID1 or RAID5.

Nope. They are 7200rpm drives for 8TB and above.

Read the WD Red Plus data-sheet and you will know. Read the bold fine print too.
