Hi all,

I would like to ask a few things. I want to set up a website for my dad's shop. I am using M1's fibre broadband at home, while the shop is using StarHub's cable broadband.

The thing I want to ask is, how can I set up a website (with domain name)?

I would like to set up a website either at home or at the shop. I heard residential internet cannot set up servers. Is website considered?

Or is there any hosting website to intro?

I just want lowest cost + trustable.

One important question you should ask yourself (or your Dad): What do you expect out of the web site in the first place?

If it will be just a handful of static web pages for informational purpose (e.g. product catalog, enquiry form, business location), you can use those hosted solution like Yahoo! Web Hosting for small business, Webs.com, WIX.com, Weebly or Yola. They all provide web tools to edit and design your web pages or setup a simple blog. They also provide a convenient way to register a domain name for your site.

If you intend to setup and manage your hosting, then Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Amazon EC2 allows you to setup a virtual machine instance. Another possibility is those traditional Linux/Windows web hosting like GoDaddy, HostGator, NameCheap, DreamHost and BlueHost where you can have a private dedicated server (expensive) or shared host (cheap but less reliable/secure). They also cross-sell domain name registration service. This is recommended if you intend to setup e-commerce site (online storefront) for online shopping and online payment processing.

If you intend to design a custom web application for some business workflow or unique requirements, then check out Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) cloud hosting. Google AppSpot and Microsoft Azure are some options. Though you need programming and integration with some in-house information systems (e.g. ERP).

These days, it's very rare one needs or even wants to run their own server because it's a hassle to setup and maintain it. A static IP address is required and the server has to be kept powered up 24x7, and also probably need a UPS and a cluster setup for redundancy/fail-over. Need money for all these extra hardware. And you have to keep monitoring it for intrusions and software updates and patches.

Setting up a website at home sounds easy at first, but honestly, residential broadband really isn’t reliable or allowed for it, especially for anything business related. I tried hosting a small site for fun years ago on my internet at home and kept running into connection problems, plus, my IP address would change and it was a pain. Hosting companies are definitely easier to manage, safer, and end up being more cost-effective.

Now I stick with proper hosting even for personal projects. It saves effort, keeps everything way more stable, and lets you focus on your actual website instead of constant server problems. If you’re looking into bigger or more reliable setups, there are providers like server mania that let you tailor your hosting to what you need.
