Firstly, what do you need the car for? To run weekend errands? How far do you need to travel?
Or to go Malaysia? Or using it as a hobby to mod and enjoy?

It's about making the car serve you as it is a big ticket item, don't end up buy OPC, today raining you pay $20 to drive to work. Tomorrow need to carry lots of stuff to work, pay another $20. Or you try to save $20 and spend $40 on Grab to get to office.
Might as well get normal plate.

There was a period where I didn't use my car much, low mileage. There are still running costs, battery, oil change, tyres (sort of fixed cost items). Now I drive 18k km a year, main cost difference is higher petrol bill (variable cost).

One of the car dealer told my colleague this when he was shopping for ROPC car back in 2013.. "buying a red plate car is like buying a house with a small discount but only being able to enter the house from 7pm to 7am"

It really depends on your needs. I calculated if u pay 3 x 20$ for every 2 weeks still worth to get ropc.

Is it worth to buy a used weekend car and convert to normal plate? Used OPC car generally low mileage .

How to know the cost to convert without knowing owner ID?

If you know how much coe left you can pro-rate the calculation*17,000. Like if left 3y would be 0.3*17,000

if ur job requirement is shift work like starting 7pm-6am (factor going back) or u like heading in to camp before 7am and go home after 7pm.. then it's probably to make sense to u.

but then again $17k off? with so many restrictions.. defeat the purpose of "convenience"?

car "image" aside (i.e. red plate vs black plate car stereotyping), It really really depends on your lifestyle...car-wise whatever floats your boat, although a hybrid would make you immune to petrol price movements

e.g. my previous car was OPC mazda non-hybrid, I only drove once/twice a week and on weekends because my workplace is 2 MRT stops away. current workplace in woodlands, so no choice have to use a normal plate car

unlikely used car to be normal -> OPC -> normal -> OPC la.
most people just do one-way conversion, either normal -> OPC or OPC -> normal

if want to know can ask dealer check for you before you finalize the sale. if dealer refuses then just walk away
