I have a SSD and another 2TB HDD (samsung brand)

my OS is installed inside the SSD, whereas the HDD contains data from my previous boot.

if I don't connect my HDD, I can boot up normally. however, i can't boot when I connect the HDD instead

go to bios and setup your SSD hdd as highest boot priority.

Many SSD upgraders make the mistake when doing SSD OS setup by having both SSD and old OS HDD connected. During windows setup, if MBR is found in old OS HDD, setup will proceed to modify it instead of creating a new MBR on the SSD. So your freshly setup SSD has no MBR and need the old HDD to boot.

The correct process should disconnect the all secondary HDD except the SSD and ODD. Connect back when setup completes.

The new ssd has no MBR still can boot?

okay here's the steps i take:

i have a thumbdrive with windows 8 installation inside

i mount all 3 hard disk, one of them was chosen to be the boot drive; SSD for this case.

initially the windows installation process is stuck at "setup is starting". I really waited for quite a while, went down to eat lunch then back.

after which, I took out both hard disks, except the SSD, and miraculously the setup is able to proceed smoothly.

So there are 2 HDD which I haven't connect yet; I connect the first one and it works. However, when i connect the 2nd one, it doesn't work. Even if i connect the 2nd disk only (with the SSD), it still doesn't work as well

does "doesn't work" mean doesn't pass post/freeze & can't enter bios, or pass post but can't find windows to boot?

TS, re-arrange your sata connection. Connect SSD to first sata port and check BIOS again if SSD is your first boot device.

Have a bootable windows installer ready. In windows remove the boot partition from old HDD, shutdown and remove old hdd

when u restart boot from USB then
Repair your computer.
Select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

Type Bootrec.exe /fixboot, and then press enter

Type Bootrec.exe /fixmbr, and then press enter

Once u restart and can boot u can plug in old hdd
