Recently I bought 2 WD red, but when use the serial number to check, the warranty is based on manufacture date which is less than 3 years.

So I sent an inquiry to WD and below is the answer:

Is the warranty based on your manufacturing or my purchase date?
---- The device's warranty is currently based on manufacture date.

What a let down by WD. Ad 3 years warranty but actually is not.

Warranty is based on manufacture date. That has always been the case.

Dunno about WD but for other brand is go by purchase date (Invoice).
If you don't have invoice to back it up then is go by manufacturer date

Last I checked with WD, it's by manufacture date. That was some years back. I did another check just now and it is now by purchase date with invoice and manufacture date without invoice.

It's always from date of purchase as long as you have proof of purchase.

If you don't have proof of purchase then you get warranty from the manufacture date.

Really very fair. Same for pretty much anything that comes with a warranty from the manufacturer.

He use the serial number. WD will assume it's sold by the first manufactured date which obviously isn't true but there's no other way for them to tell.

Nah. If you don't have invoice it goes by serial/manufacturer date. If you do, it goes by your purchase date

This is my understanding as well. I think you can dispute the warranty validity. It makes no sense to go by the manufacturing date because it may be quite a number of months of difference.

U need to scan in your invoice to qualify for the full warranty period.

Normally this isn't needed if the stocks are new, cos from the manufacturer date it is often more than the official warranty so no need to scan invoice, but for old stock, this may be less than the warranty.

Don't kancheong, register your product first and check again.

A valid proof of purchase may be required to prove eligibility. If you do not have a valid proof of purchase, the limited warranty period will be measured from the date of sale from Western Digital to the authorized distributor.

https://www.westerndigital.com/support/warranty-statement

By default, WD calculates the warranty date from the manufacturing date. It means a hard disk bought in January 2010 but manufactured in August 2009, will have its warranty time calculated from August.

WD offers an easy way that allows users to update the warranty of their HDD online, thus to calculate it from the date of purchase. To do so, you need to have a proof of purchase, i.e. payment receipt or bill.

It seems like need to register, but it is very funny they way they answered it as:

Do I need to register the warranty online?
---- It's up to you, when you register the device, you can register it with purchase date, the the warranty will be correct one.
