What happened to Comics Connection?
When I was in Primary School, I always had a fear of walking into these comic shops. I would usually buy my toys at the big departmental stores, but I always wanted to go into one to see see look look. I always had the mindset that these type of specialty stores will surely overcharge, and the stuff inside were for the "cool" kids.
In 1999, I started going to Comics Connection to buy Pokemon cards. As a kid, the cards were pretty darn expensive. 1 pack can cost $5 to $7? As a kid I didn't know better and always felt that they overcharged (But they did not lah, that was the retail price). But I would still be awe over the stuff they had. They had a healthy supply of cards and cards supplies, they had comics, and they had some awesome collectibles. They had Gundam, they had Zoids, they had Beyblades, they had Tamiya and tons of other interesting stuff.
I always liked the cheap Power Rangers robot model kits that Bandai put out every year, so every time they were released, I would go Comics Connection to buy. They constantly brought in Trading figures, and Candy Toys too.
I don't know since when, but probably 2004 onwards or so. Maybe I just grew up and became more aware, but I realised they also sell a ton of stuff collectors will not buy. Fake idol cards, fake china toys, fake anime puzzles, fake anime coin banks, and tons of useless stuff. Their healthy supplies of trading card also went down, I couldn't just walk in the shop and asked for 10 packets of cards anymore, they usually don't even have 10 packs. And since 2010 or so, they even stopped bring in yearly Bandai Candy toys products.
As the years went on, they were really only good for 2 things, 1. trading cards which they did not have a healthy supply of any specific booster or deck most of the time, 2. comics, 3. Games.
Dunno since when Gundam and other model kits they also stopped bringing in.
In my head, I was thinking if they could have maintained a high standard of merchandise, they could have survived. Collectors will not buy fake stuff! Collectors will want to go to a place to get their supplies. Collectors will expect healthy and consistent stock.
