What is "Networking" to you?

The current Gov Ware Security conference set me thinking on different people think on the issue of "Networking". Not the IT Networking, but the professional network "knowing more people".

I think we can agree that many person's final aim in Networking is to have an easy path to a job.

I have friends who goes to Gov ware, collect multiple name cards and proclaimed he had increased his network. To me, thats not networking. No one in the right mind, will hire someone he met in a conference.

Networking to me is about showing your capabilities and professionalism to the people you work with. So much so, they will be willing to vouch for you in the future.

Going around to collect name cards is not networking

It depend on how do you network. By collecting name cards, that is not networking. But if you give good impression to "strangers" or your new friends, that is networking.

I network through courses an forums. And of course, through friends recommendation.

I mostly agree with this, and that collecting name cards is not networking. However, I would just say that 'building a relationship' with said people is what matters. If that means demonstrating knowledge and professionalism, great. For some though, it is simply socializing and getting along well. Is that the "right" way to network? Yes, if it gets you a job it is. Is it the way you want to find out a coworker who is referring someone a candidate knows that person? Probably not.

To me, go out lim kopi with new people and get to know them personally... go out rub shoulders with all dept heads during Karaoke sessions, company dinners, trips etc... go clubbing together.. I know u ... u know me... build up your circle of frens.... , then being head hunted thru recommendation.

In the IT world. "Networking" is BULLSH1T.
Basically, it means it is difficult to trust people.
People do "Networking" because they need
other people to do their job. Simple as that.
