I have this problem with my hdd (3.5" SATA via usb, using an external powered hdd casing):

1. When it is already plugged in to my computer, turning the power of the external casing on -> computer does not detect the drive. unplug usb without turning power of external casing off and replug usb, connection registers

2. when not plugged in to computer, turning on the external case first then plugging it into the usb afterwards detects the disk.

what is wrong here and how do i fix it? Thanks in advance

I don't see anything wrong.
isn't it supposed to detect automatically when i power on the external casing even when its already plugged in? it happens that way for my other hdds previously.

Could be the USB chipset inside causes this issue. Just live with it.

I have one older 3.5 ext HDD casing that behaves like that too. It's always a guessing game to figure out how to get it to detect. My Seagate 3.5 ext HDDs don't have this issue. It does give me the impression that if you get a generic/cheap ext HDD casing, might end up with a crap controller.

If you have tested this casing with another comp and got the same problem, you can try changing the casing.
