I am currently trying to throw away all my old 1/2GB SD cards, and buy a few bigger storage card for future usage. Then I come into this debate, between myself?

What kind of strategy you deploy to store your photos, when you are away from home, like for example, travelling?

Initially I want to buy 1, 2 pieces of 32 or 64GB to use. But then I think, if during a trip, halfway the SD gone, it means all photos stored inside are gone as well. So I think about, buying 5, 6 pieces or 8GB or 16Gb cards, each will be for 1 day of usage, and end of the day, I will just change the card to the day2/3/4 card.

Does this make sense?

If you are bring along your notebook, then it's easy that you extract all photos from the card to your portable/notebook storage before you begin the next day.

If not, you can find those 2.5" HDD casing that has USB OTG capability to copy pictures out from your camera or comes with SD card reader to copy those files out.
