What should I do?

hi guys,

I am a NSF who is about to ORD soon, in 1 month's time. I graduate from NP's chemical engineering idploma, though my GPA is only 2.5+. i had apply to various unis ever since 2014,but to no avail.

Now that I am about to ORD, I am actually very confused about my future. I know that I have a strong desire to work in the research sector, and my internship supervisor was more than happy to welcome me back to work as a lab officer with him. I did have thoughts of working and studying part-time,but I am not sure if I could manage everything well, as I had bad experiences in the past for poor time management which cost my grades to dip.

Having said that, I have actually mapped out a list of options for me, and I would appreciate if you guys could give your feedback about my choices listed below.

Studying

1. apply to NTU(got rejected)
2. apply to SIT(got rejected since 2014)
3. apply to UniSim(got rejected)
4. apply to PSB academy Degree tie-in with La Trobe University(waiting for the result)
5. studying in a completely different field
6. apply for NUS Part Time Deg in Chemical Engineering

Work

1. work in research lab,apply for NUS Part Time Deg in Chemical Engineering
2. gain some work experience before applying to local Uni

Others

1. take SAT
2. take A levels

My parents are not really well to do, so an overseas education is out of the question, unless they struck the lottery overnight. I just dropped an email to my MP about this, and I would hope that he could help me in whatever way he can.

Right now, i am using online means(eg Coursera, edX) to learn more new skills, such as Coding skills, foreign languages and many more. I hope that these skills are a plus point on my resume.

i dont think your MP can help you in any way to get into SIT / SUTD or NUS / NTU, when your GPA is only 2.5++... PSB academy for chem? i dont know man.

option 3 is waste of time tbh. Option 2 under working seems to be the most sensible.. but have u checked if your grades would qualify for their part time chem eng course, with 2-3years of working exp?

and say, after you managed to endure through that 4-5years and you finally get your chem eng, you would already be in your late 20s, armed with lab work exp.. what r u gonna do next?

the working world out there is much more harsher than you think it is.

for 2.5 you can stop dreaming of entering any of the big 3, not even for their part time courses.

why? cos I kenna rejected by ntu part time EEE degree 5 years ago with 3.1 from np mechatronic. end up applying unisim part time and already graduated.

what left for ts is only private degree courses. the end.

Accept you? Bro, drop that dream la. Part time courses also need at least 3.2/3.3. Your GPA is waaaayyy off cut-off point. I 3.9 also get rejected from some of the courses. 2.5 best go SIM or overseas Uni.

Tell me again, what have you done in the 2 years other than this Long forum post that goes towards solving your problem? The answer is nothing. You sat around waiting for the other shoe to drop and sure enough even UniSIM rejected you. Didn't that ring alarm bells in your head?

The only possible way is for you to take up the offer to be a lab assistant, save some money to do an advanced diploma to make up for your embarrassment of a diploma.

I'm surprised 2 years of NS has not woken you up to the fact that life is not easy and there comes a time even when the world Says you are a try hard that you have to take things seriously. If you don't nobody will and where you end up is exactly the sort of situation you're finding yourself in right now.

Taking the A levels won't miraculously cure you of your inability to set realistic goals and or build your discipline if 2 years of NS can't do the same.

Same for the SAT. On which earth and on which website do you see SAT as an admission standalone qualification? Even in America the SAT is often accompanied by a high school diploma or GED.

Please wake up, smell the coffee, realise you're in Singapore and that your parents can no longer bail you out of your **** and start acting like ah adult. Time is not on your side.

dear TS, when i said the working world out there is harsh, i am not referin to just the working conditions.
u need to think carefully, what r the prospects of the path u choose... becos if u fk up, it'll be very very difficult for you to go back on track again. SG is not as merciful as some of western countries. In the sense that, if u screw up and then go on to take a third tier deg qualification coupled with some rojak working exp, pretty much no one will bat an eye lid to give u any chance...

u mentioned that u r keen to do research but u r not very good at time management and your family is not so well off to begin with. i know its not fair for me to say this but it just seems you r not suited to go down that route...

perhaps u wanna consider some other career options. forumers here are harsh but they speak the truth. becos this is the way how modern SG is...

if your GPA fall short means no. there's no "hoping". U need to wake up and accept the fact that you come from an ordinary singaporean family with no connections to the country's elites.

Time to be real, get your foot onto the ground n start walking. You'll probably realize life is much better in NS than out here.

U graduated with a diploma so it's not the end of the world unlike A lvl students who have a worthless cert.

Should u take A lvls or SATs? Do u think u will do well in exams? If not, it will be a waste of time.

Writing to MP, this is what they will likely reply, go work first.

Since u are interested in research, u could try to contact your prof to see if he knows of any lab that would hire a poly grad as a lab tech. I would recommend for u to work in the field u are interested in for a few years b4 you are eligible to qualify in local uni as a mature candidate.

You can go read up on the mature candidate policy. From what I can recall, your poly grades will no longer be important. Instead, they look at your work experience. So u can check how many years you should work b4 applying as a mature candidate & plan how to bulk up your CV & work exp.

If I were an Alien visiting earth and was unlucky enough to land on this place and look to here for advice, I'll be more confused than enlightened.

Does nobody live in Jurong or Clementi,have the time to sit in the canteen on a Friday evening to see that you absolutely cannot find anybody that look a day older than 35 that happens to be a student?!

And how is SIMGEs willingness to take in a CGPA 2.5 such that they pretty much show they have no standards an indicator that they are a good university? It's good because they are the only one other than PSB willing to take OP in? What sort of logic is that?

OP there are no short or easy cuts. Because you failed to plan in the first half of your 20s, you spend the 2nd half of it learning the hard way by gaining work experience, getting an advanced diploma (not a CET one) that will give you a remote chance of getting back into the big 3 if academics is the be all and end all for you.
