SINGAPORE: More than 2 million Singaporeans have voted in the country’s 12th General Election, with ballot boxes closing at 8pm on Friday (Sep 11). Voters had 12 hours to cast their ballot at 832 polling stations across the island.

For the first time since Singapore’s independence in 1965, all the seats in Parliament are being contested. There are a total of 89 seats in 29 constituencies.

In 2015, for the first time, the Elections Department (ELD) will be making public the results of sample counts once the counting of ballots begins.

This will give the public an early indication of the result in most constituencies. The sample count will be done at the start of the counting process at each of the 163 counting centres islandwide. The first sample counts are expected in less than an hour of the close of polls.

While the numbers are said to be fairly indicative of the outcome, the ELD has advised the public to wait for the announcement of the final election results by the Returning Officer, Mr Ng Wai Choong.

The ruling People’s Action Party is contesting all 89 seats. They are facing a total of eight opposition parties - the Workers' Party, National Solidarity Party, Singapore Democratic Party, Reform Party, Singaporeans First, Singapore People's Party, Singapore Democratic Alliance and People's Power Party – as well as two independents.
