I go Batam v frequent, every other month, to do groceries, spa treatment. Better than JB. Anyways, you never know unless you try.
Anytime can go, just not those long weekends or sch hols – queue and ferry damn crowded. But still faster than clearing MY immigration.
There's a new area for youngsters with hipster cafe and Blue Fire Beach Club (with pink sand) at Bengkoang area. Nightime got street food and activities for youngsters - saw plenty of SG youth at the club.
Shopping
Grand Batam Mall – imagine Vivo, but maybe more local brands. Got Sketchers and outlet sport shops. Quite good deals. Plenty of good restaurants also. Basement got supermarket and tidbits. Got a few others malls, but either old, local products or out of the way or too many fakes.\
Spa
Eska Spa at Harbor Bay Terminal – reasonably price, if you go for full spa its private room with shower, jacuzzi tub etc, worth it. Abt $50-150 from basic to full spa w mani pedi.
Stay – I always book via Airbnb Harbor Bay Residence, the condo above the Harbor Bay Ferry terminal. Its convenient with marts and food in same building and most weekends got pasar malam. There’s a cheesy crispy fried banana staff at the food court here. Always tapau bring back.
Seafood – plenty around Batam, even at Harbor Bay. I try around few places like Golden Prawn, Kopak Jaya 007 (nice place, but a bit out & closes early) and Wey Wey. If you dining alone, just go to the Chinese restaurants in the malls, they serve good seafood too.
Food – plenty of local, western even reputable names. Last week, I tried the Sushi Mentai Batam and Saveurs de France (both next to each other, so had sushi then desserts next door). Cheap and good.
Durian also cheap, plenty at roadsides. I took grab to get to everywhere.. abt $5 for short distance and less than $10 for 30 mins distance. Don’t engage in those drivers loitering at terminal, charge you double or triple.
