Hello, hope to seek some comments/ experience re what foods to eat/avoid after a surgical operation… My gran (78yo) just went for a major spine op & thankfully, can discharge 3 days earlier than expected.

Already ordered home delivery catering (supposed to be quite good in post-surgery nutritious meals) but can’t bring forward the delivery.

In meantime, hope to ask around what outside meals shld I buy for elderly people who just had a major op. Porridge? Herbal soup? Mindful to ask for less salt & less oil etc anything else I shld avoid? Should avoid chicken?

Thanks much in advance. We’ll also seek dietary advice from the doctors.
Bless ur grandma. 生鱼汤。
Avoid seafood.
Try a TCM 片仔癀。1 pill $200

TS, may I know which catering company did you order for the post surgery recovery meals? I am thinking of doing the same for my dad who is undergoing heart bypass surgery end of this month. Quite a few companies offer this and I could not decide which one to choose.

western doctor hardly study about dietary nutrition, or theirs will be very specific. usually low fat, low sugar, soft/liquid diet etc.
almost never heard them say avoid seafood or chicken etc etc. these seems to belong to TCM specialty.
therefore. although western doctors says no restriction in diet. the patient still may seek tcm opinion on what foods to avoid or eat more

Hello ya quite a number of options I’m wasn’t sure which to choose also.

In end decided on Kang Le Kitchen. It’s pricey at around S$35-40 per meal (incl delivery & cheaper if longer duration) but menu supposed to be tailored for post -surgery condition and they will deliver the food hot in thermal bag so less likely to get stale food.

We will try for the 2 week package to see how it goes. Only starting next Tues 12 Jul so can’t give much feedback yet.

All the best for your dad’s op 👍

Thanks to all who shared your comments - will take note!

old folks i know saw snakehead fish

can help with the healing of the wound.

also, she so old liao, let her eat whats she wants lah. not like she's gonna live till 100. dont need to less oil less salt, cos at their age, their tastebuds no good. you less this and that liao, the food will taste bland. a few days ok but after 3 days of eating tasteless food, anyone would go crazy

Thank u for your kind comments. Actually these days with medical advancements, it is really quite possible for some to live close to 90 or even 100.

My gran still considered “young” for 78, as she’s still senile and still enjoying life. Hope she can live longer. So we still keen for her to watch her diet but nods, she can also indulge more in her fav foods after she fully recovers.

Speedy recovery op

You can consider anything light and healthy- homemade fish or mince pork porridge, sandwich with tomatoes lettuce ham cheese wholemeal bread, soup with chicken breast meat corn and carrots, fruit salad, veg salad with a dash of acv and sesame seed oil, yong Tau full with bok choy...

Actually not necessary lots of rest. Often, doctors will recommend movement after certain surgery to improve blood circulation. Better check with your doctor.
