We all gather here to talk about essentially money and making money. I am wondering what are each of your backgrounds? Curious to see if we have more IT/engineering type or finance/business type. :)

I will start. Educational background is construction for my basic degree and MBA majoring in marketing. Work specialities include marketing, publishing and creatives. Plus entrepreneurship and startups.

Engineering diploma, economics and management degree, now in IT related field.

I must say the engineering part gave me analytical skills, the economics and management part gave me more insight into the world, and the IT part in appreciating the technological trends.

Higher NITEC in Electronic engineering, Diploma in business admin, ACCA graduate.

Work specialized in financial reporting.

To wondrdoggie:
I hear going for MBA is to build associates. How was your MBA course? Any such networking activities going on there?

Well, I went for my MBA for 2 main reasons. To change career (I didn't like the construction or diplomacy fields) and to get out of SG (I went to the US).

I did learnt quite a lot from my MBA and not all from the classroom. From the program, I realized that while I am good in creative fields like marketing. Finally figuring out what I like and what I am good at defined the career I pursued.

I would say that the choice of school and program matter a lot for mba. The right school allows you to network with the right people and meet the right recruiters. Networking activities are frequent among students and with potential companies. Most of us managed to change career and get good increases. And many including myself stayed on to work in the US.

Locally, I would say if you want a mba that gives good mileage, go for nus, ntu, insead. If not, your employer may just give you a $100 increment.

Hi wondrdoggie,

Thanks for the advice. On the ground I hear people going for MBA is to get into projects, find someone who is in line with your career objective and work closely with him hoping one day he sees your potential and offer you on board.

I guess that has alot to do with luck only works if you pump into someone at a director level to fully realise this opportunity.

Still deciding if this is the path I need to take to reach my goal.

If you had searched my old posts, I used to hang out at Academic Concerns dishing out some advice.

Forgot to add, I am ACTA certified, too.

If the aim is to meet a 贵人, I think there are better and cheaper ways than 2 years of your life and tens/hundreds of thousand dollar. :)

I think you need to figure out why you want an MBA and if such a paper cert can really get you what you want. I have hired people with masters and even phd, frankly, I just care about whether the person can do the work and can grow in the job. Basic degree is usually sufficient fir most jobs.
