I totally agree, why don't you guys just stick to one, WHATSAPP?
Since so many frens and colleagues, even my oversea frens they all are using whatsapp, really don't want to download other apps which barely occupied the space of my phone and seldom use it.
Every now and then you will see new apps coming out, but, only whatsapp still survive and very popular among frens.
In fact, WHATSAPP is a worldwide popular.

+1 for Telegram.

Managed to convince almost all of my frequent Whatsapp contacts to switch.

Multiple devices, ad-free, simple and clean interfaces for both mobile and desktop versions. Not sure what's not to like.

+2 for Telegram.

Getting contacts to switch over is much harder. and the interface to use secret chats is pretty terrible

if only telegram has the option to hide last seen from contacts, right now i notice some managers in smes are using it instead of whatsapp for group chats. Very easy to see whos currently typing in group chat, and can see whos online too. 0 privacy

whatever whatsapp have, telegram needs to have also.. they are still missing out on a few gesture based actions in whatsapp such as swipe left on a chat to view media quickly

It has come to the point where I have to hold two numbers to get work done, simply because my regular number has all the chat apps and users/customers alike, like to abuse it. Adding you into groups (my last job had 20 over groups - that's just INTERNAL), customers also wanted to add me...

I've resorted to having another phone line with no data so only SMS and calls can be made, never have to rush and read a whastapp or update people through whatsapp on projects/information etc.

Now my iPhone is peace and quiet with only messages from friends & family.

I like the clean interface of whatsapp, sometimes less is more! Another challenge for new apps is to get your friends to try it. Not all people like to switch over to from an app which they've been using for quite some time with not MUCH problem.
