whatsapp notifications too loud

I have this problem where my whatsapp notifications are extremely loud even though my ringer volume is low. I can change the ringer volume but the whatsapp notification sound doesnt change and stays super loud.

Anyone has this issue? currently on iphone x though I had this problem with my iphone 7 too

settings > sounds & haptics > toggle "change with buttons" to ON
