Hi guys,

A bit confused and hope to get some help here. :)
I am trying to replace my 500GB Samsung 860 Evo Sata SSD with a 1TB 970 Evo M2 SSD as my boot drive (haven't buy yet).

Using Ryzen 2600x on a MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, RTX 2070.

I was looking at the MB specs, under "storage", and got a bit confused where to install it, and how many drives the MB can take:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-AC/Specification

AMD® B450 Chipset
4 x SATA 6Gb/s ports1
1 x M.2 slot (M2_2, Key M)1
Supports PCIe 2.0 x4 2242/ 2260 /2280 storage devices

AMD® CPU
1 x M.2 slot (M2_1, Key M)1
Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 (1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™/ Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics and 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Graphics) or PCIe 3.0 x2 (Athlon™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics) and SATA 6Gb/s 2242/ 2260 /2280/ 22110 storage devices
2 x SATA 6Gb/s ports1

PCI_E2, PCI_E3, PCI_E4 and PCI_E5 slots will be unavailable when installing M.2 PCIe SSD in M2_2 slot.
SATA5 and SATA6 ports will be unavailable when installing a M.2 device in M2_1 slot.

After reading it, i think i should install in the M2_1 since it is faster? And i should still be able to utilise another 3 Sata ports?

Hope to end up with:
970 Evo (boot)
860 Evo (storage)
2x WD Sata HDD (storage)

ya put in the 1 slot as you will get pci-e 3.0 x4 speed. you put in the 2nd slot you get pci-e 2.0 x4 only..

for sata slot disabled when using m2 slots, the first slot will disable only the 5th and 6th sata port.

if you use the 2nd m2 slot, will disable your 2, 3, 4 and 5th pci-e slots.

btw, make sure your m2 ssd is nvme pci-e m2 ssd, don't get sata m2 variant because it will be bottlenecked like your sata ssd

Notebook cloning a bit more work. Desktop easier cos can just plug in drive to sata port.

Posted from PCWX using Jedi mind trick.

Wait, if you use a PCIe ssd, 4 PCI-E slots will be unusable? so jialat? All boards like this?

Budget chipsets usually shared pcie lanes. U want more lanes, get x570. No shared. 6 sata + 2 pcie nvme + 2 x8 gpu.
