Where to study for IT?

Hi , I want a career on IT->Cyber security but i would like to know how can i get started?

I just graduated from poly but is holding a diploma totally unrelated to IT. I'm not sure whether i am able to go back to poly to study again for IT related course or is there any better ways that i can do this?

I do not have any prior knowledge on IT , right now I'm currently trying to learn java on a certain website.

what u wanna do? Developer or Infra? Anyway, I would suggest to you to learn from udemy and pluralsight.

What you want to learn is not Java, it's learning Computer Science. There are a lot more to Computer Science and security is one faculty of its own. Learning Java wouldn't make you good enough to appreciate computing and hence the intricacies of security related issues with technologies.

If you are really interested, go pursue a degree in Computer Science. Those that enter university from JC mostly have no prior knowledge to Computing either. So since you already have a diploma, try a private degree course with Computer Science.

Its nvr too late. Pluralsight content u need to go thru it n decide. Pluralsight one u buy from ebay a code then register. Its only 50USD for 6 months access. If u buy direct is 299USD for 1 year.

Target OSCP or CCIE Security then Togaf 9 and/or CISSP. The reason being is OSCP don't require u to have alot of experience to get certified but its a tough exam.Another is CCIE security. U dont need a degree to get started in security. Just CCIE security or OSCP alone can kick start your security career. Determination n luck will land u in a good place. Others low end certs dont get you anywhere like CEH, Security plus etc, but its a good starting point , purpose for more knowledge only.

Dont waste too much time on your degree as its ard 99% outdated n dont use it in real life. Get the fastest one with most exemptions. Its a prerequisite to up your career n open more doors.

Please consider software security as an option.IMHO, I dont see the point doing network security as it currently too many ppl in plus cloud tech is making a killing that alot of infra ppl are being made redundant.

pls take note its a gamble, as IT trend always changes, its wise to follow the current trend n quickly get certified if u want change. Timing is very important as u need to ride on the IT trend waves. Last year was cloud, this year is security n cloud development.

well some ppl do not have the options to go the 3 local unis ma. e.g. cant get in, or already attended local u in some other course (example do econs degree but now want to do IT) of cos those are the first choice.

HR will see a graduate diploma as a diploma as they dont understand. The word diploma in graduate diploma degrades this qualification.

Sorry guys my place alot of interns.NUS grad great at paperwork, sucks at actual work. The real good ones are from NTU, great at paperwork n actual work. What they learn at school is throw out the window n I welcome them to the IT working world.

I don't observe that NTU are better than NUS students, neither do I see the other way round. You are as good as what you are. I didn't come from a fantastic primary school and my secondary school is nothing fantastic, same goes for my JC. Yet I still manage to enter NUSSOC just like a lot of other well recognised schools like RI, VJC, HC and so forth you name it. I didn't graduate from NUSSOC with a fantastic grade, but I don't think I am earning bad compared to a lot of my peers working around my years. So there is little point comparing where you come from, but think more about who you are and who you are talking about. Focus on the individual, not a sweeping statement.

Hi. Like other posters, I would encourage you to take up a degree in Computer Science/Information Security to expose yourself to different topics and equip yourself with good foundation so that you can pick up things on your own in the future.

I disagree with the poster who encouraged you to take the shortest degree possible. This is because you have no background at all, so learning things on your own from a book or any internet resource will be difficult. If you could do that, whatever degree doesn't really make a big different except for HR purposes.

I would also discourage you from focusing on one area like what network security or software security for now, I think the most optimal approach is to absorb whatever knowledge you can get, then you won't fall into the trap of tunnel vision your own career even before you know what it is. Furthermore, technologies "change" very fast but fundamentals don't. Alot of the "new" things you see now are just re-branding / reinvention of the same old stuff back in the 80s and 90s. Therefore if you get the fundamentals down, I don't think there's much to worry.


Lastly I went through a few degree curriculums and here are my rankings based on how comprehensive the programs are.

If you could go to NUS/NTU/SMU -
1. NUS Information Security
2. NTU CS
3. SMU SIS

Others
1. SIT Information and Communications Technology (Information Security)
2. SIM - UOW Digital Systems Security
