Following mookietea's post, here's my take on brown linen. From a recent vacation.

Hi everyone, when we wear a suit, should we expose a bit of our shirt cuff? Some tailor say jacket should cover the cuff of our dress shirt but I see some exposing the cuff
Yup, but we were talking about jackets and not suits on a day to day usage. The inference here is that wearing a jacket=formality and special occasions.
Jackets can be done in all sorts of materials and paired differently for a more casual feel. I do that quite a bit. I do Where I go on my off days is certainly not upmarket or high society. I only refrain from wearing them if the weather in Singapore is too darn hot.
I'll like to think of jackets as an additional accessory for dressing well, just like how we wear our really "expensive watches."
On a side note, if people wear their >100k dress watches to eat at hawker centers, is that considered overdressing too? Lol.
End of the day, it's just Singapore and you are right about it being a debate that will never end. Which is also why we have had several articles discussing the fashion sense of us Singaporean men.
I used the term suits but i meant to include jackets and the same inferences u made. The watches example i think is diff in the sense it's about cost. Eg $10 vs $100,00 watch. Jacket/suit is distinct piece of clothing whether to wear or not wear, regardless the cost of the jacket/suit.
There's really no right or wrong and my reply is not so that i get the last word. Actually my original question was really to find out more on what occasions/places in sg would some of u guys put on jacket/suit. Cos in my scope/circle, i do not really see any. Petia shared. Which i would say his case would be quite rare.

i only put on a suit or jacket in Singapore for work purposes or evening theatres.
Other than that, i would prefer wearing anything but that.
Even a light weave jacket is hot in June.

Hi everyone, I'm a student that's going to enter corporate working world, have been planning to hit a tailor to settle all my clothing needs. Here is my current plan, maybe i can get your opinions on it?
5x shirts, basic shades only (White, Blue, Pink)
1x Dark Grey 2 button suit (Already have this)
1x Navy Blue 2 button suit (Supposedly more suitable for formal events than a grey suit, am i wrong? Pls enlighten me)
3x Black or grey pants
1x black shirt (more of a for fun thing, to wear to parties etc)
1x striped shirt (Not sure what colours or patterns, looking for a more for fun/dress down vibe)
1x Black dress shoes/belt (Mainly for work)
1x brown dress shoes/belt (Brown leather is more of a for fun thing, will be my last priority because leather tend to be quite expensive)
2x black tie? (Just looking for a formal vibe that's suitable for working, just black tie will do?)
It really depends on what you're working as and what's the expected dress code at work? Also, what industry?
Unless you need to wear a suit on a daily basis at work, you might as well just make do with one suit first, and use the money to make more shirts instead (5 is quite little and people will start noticing that you have the "days" shirts which are recycled on a weekly basis). That also gives you a bit more time to see what others wear in the industry and thus how much latitude you have in your wardrobe.
Ties will depend on the shirts you get. no need for them to be black, but get simple whole colours (that are not loud) to start so that they are easy to match. Again, build the collection up with time.
While it is good to have more than 1 pair of work shoes, decent shoes are not cheap so if budget is a concern, start simple with 1 pair of black shoes (which are comfortable) and just black trousers. Once you start earning some money then you go expand the wardrobe. By that time, you will hopefully also know what is necessary / acceptable in your work environment.
I suggest 2 solid light blue poplin, 1 light blue stripes, 1 light blue end on end or pinpoint if you prefer something a little more casual. Finally a light pink poplin.
I agree that best to start with around 10 shirts (2 week rotation).
Assuming u starting off buying ready-to-wear fr shops, most impt is to 1st find a brand/size that fits u well. Then build up wardrobe slowly. White, blue, pink, lilac plain colours always safe and won't go wrong.
Most likely I will be wearing everything tailored when it comes to working clothes, i really really dislike off the rack (just a personal thing haha)
Yes, it's a Black Watch tartan but in summer weight and weave. Vintage fabric.![]()
Guys, has anyone of you ever visit James Lee tailor at Yishun before?
Went in to speak with the uncle before, got quite a no. of nice ready made sample. a pair of cashmere pants costs like 150$.
have been considering for quite a while.
meanwhile, will be visiting thailand in april and thinking thinking of getting two pieces shirts and a pair of pants from tailor on ten.
their price seems quite steep for the highest quality fabric, but are their lowest quality fabric just as good?
need some advice on this. thanks!
guys, what do you do if your suit pants is too tight? i made a suit a couple of years back, gained some weight but the top is still good to use.
will the tailor keep the details / material so they can make a new pair of pants or do they alter the old pair?
