whether to upgrade or not

Dear pros, interested to find out whether worth to upgrade.

my desktop setup
XB271HU
i5-4460
GTX1080
DDR3 8GB

I could not play monster hunter world at a decent fps even @1080P windowed with my desktop while my laptop specs plays it relatively smooth although not at high settings so i suppose cpu is the bottleneck.

laptop specs
i7 -7700HQ
GTX1060
DDR4 16GB


i like to game on 1440P at relatively high to max settings so i'm in a dilemma over whether i should upgrade my desktop OR just fall back to my laptop..

If upgrade, im probably looking at I7-8700 with 32GB ram.

Just thinking if the upgrade will last me for quite a while or hold if any new cpu is coming up. just wanna make sure its money well spent.

Cpu and ram bottlenecked. If you wanna play the latest and greatest, you need to upgrade.

You laptop is fine, but you already invested so heavily on monitor and gpu. Your laptop specs can't handle that monitor specs.

You gotta weight yourself, whether is it worth upgrading.

my laptop is sort of like backup so i don't usually game on it, i dont quite like the keyboard , feels flat haha. @timpeh82 i bought it between 2.2-2.5k.

I guess my key concern is whether upgrading my cpu/ram is worth it now since i read that new cpu might be coming out soon?

Upgrade to 9th gen when launch or 2nd gen Ryzen.. dont waste on 8th gen setup.

Use your laptop for the time being and wait out for new releases.

I'm sure your laptop can plug in monitor, mouse and keyboard right so no need use the default keyboard

You can consider another 8 GB of DDR3 RAM for about $50 to $70. I don't think a CPU upgrade is worthwhile unless you can find an i7-4790K on the cheap.

Problem is my ram slots also spoilt, so cant get more ram. thats why abit sian, got good gpu/monitor but cant fully utilise if dun upgrade..

If you are looking at MB+RAM upgrade, probably time to consider changing the CPU as well and do a new rig.

Why not 8th gen ? After so many years, 8th gen is the only Intel gen that worths big upgrade. Even a core i5-8600k can put most cpus in shame in term of raw performance. And it can easily o/c to 5GHz too.
