Hi all,

I would like to seek your advice on which is best for web design & illustration use. Mainly softwares are photoshop, dreamweaver, illustrator. I tend to open a lot of browser tabs as well (haha...)

I have the following in mind: Dell XPS desktop, iMac, Macbook Pro

I'm thinking of iMac cos of its all-in-one & designer feature but does it have repair problem as its an all-in-one com? Are all-in-one com recommended? I like the idea of having less cables but still the ease of sending to repair and durability is a great issue to me. I've searched online to look for the Apple service provider and its at Plaza Sing. Its kinda crazy to carry an iMac to central to get it repaired right? I'm at the East area so I'm thinking if there's any other way I can find some repair shop nearby in Tampines to get them fixed as I'm not a geek to fix it myself...

If you have any other recommendations, pls do advice :) Thanks all in advance!

if you buy smth to "standby" for breakdown, i think only dell has onsite warranty, the rest need to bring down...

it all depends on your budget and buy what you like...

i used legit adobe on both mac n windows, they are the same, the other factors you have to decide for yourself...

Thanks jedi5diah :)

But if we put aside the warranty and the need to bring down for repair issue, if you were to choose, which would you prefer? A Dell XPS desktop, an iMac or a Macbook pro? Let's say the budget is within $3k. I'm kinda stuck in between of which to choose in terms of durability that's worth the spend. As I wouldn't want to spend a $3k machine which will break down in just 3 years of use.

It's good you're thinking ahead. But the fact that a scenario in which you need to repair your com is definitely going to be inconvenient, no matter what. You may need to cab there, ask a friend to drive you, etc. But I don't think that should factor that much in your selection of your machine, since you're more likely to spend more time using it, then sending it in for repair. Doesn't make sense to centre your purchase around that once-off (hopefully, lol) inconvenience.

Thanks jedi5diah :)

Within 3K, you can easily get the 27" imac 5K. The screen alone is hard to beat. Unless you need portability, you usually get more for your $ with desktops. If you're open to building DIY, you can get even more for your $, but that's another direction altogether. I currently use both desktop (windows) and laptop (mbp) for design (PS/AI/ID), no difference. The software on both platforms are exactly the same, lol.

No guarantee on durability. I once had a iMac at work that was problematic. My own MBP - GPU died. My dad's imac - runs well beyond 3 years. I also have a lenovo laptop that never had a problem since 2008. Really a YMMV thing. You just have to hope you don't get a lemon and things will be smooth for you for 3 years. If you really worried, just spend the extra on the extended warranty I guess, I have friends who do that.

If you don't need portability, go for an iMac with Apple Care. It's a designer-go-to machine. It's all what you needed.
