Sorry for NAS I'm not sure, but for HDD best you get HGST. As for the best size really depends on which one u need. If u have a lot of data, den just buy a bigger one. Like if 1TB of data, den get a 2TB or 3TB for safer backup in case u make some time xtra copies.

Alternatively can get 1037u itx from doraemon for $100, add PSU and ram.

I'm using an asustor 5004T myself, and I quite like the software interface. Not too sure about Synology but from the benchmarks shown on the two websites, Asustor has a write speed of 90mb/s+ while Synology is only 60mb/s+.

As for HDD, I would recommend HGST over WD Red. As at the time of writing, my WD HDD is about to give up the ghost... need to buy another WD to replace it.

Entry Level moi just use a single 1TB USB3 HDD and Plug it to my router via USB3.

Better get AS1002T with HGST Hard drive.

Just get the $189 synology , I don't think it will go any wrong . I got 1813+ + Dlink DNS345 + 5 harddisk atom pc , install with freenas. So far synology is good but very expensive .

I think purple means the software. Freenas, iirc is a Linus based software and I think it's an open sources. (I have only read up a bit a few years back then)
