Gas used to be much cheaper, electric more expensive

But buy City Gas will also pay even if not using, for maintenance

Both electricity and gas got its own dangers lah -- both equally dangerous

Electric water heater got more choices, gas heater less choices.
Gas dangerous because of gas leak?

Gas more lasting than electric.
Both don't last very well compare to instant.

If your house is not stable in electricity, very easy to short the heating element in electric. During the lighting storm periods, I'm sure many went dead.

In either case, get ready to either have a service or replace every 5 to 10 years.

I will personally suggest go instant cause makes more sense. :o
Gas instant water heater also good?

Not about the cost.

Is about the safety

So you using instant water heater but powered by gas?
No, ish by electricity. All the time my heater ish by electric.

Gas dangerous because of gas leak?

Gas leak ish one thing.

Everytime the water cool down, basically the heater will start a gas fire to heat up the unit. When the gas fire burn, will have heat and other gases need to vent out, cannot be gas in and zero gas out. So will have to vent to outside.

If the wind direction blow the vented gases back into your house, then means indoor air pollution. And SG wind direction change every 6 months. http://www.weather.gov.sg/climate-climate-of-singapore/

Then no wind also GG, remember earlier this year there was a hot spell and NEA say because no wind in SG.

Usually cooking also have this problem, but cooking ish maybe 1-2 hours per day, not 24/7 on/off cycle mah.

Ish assuming storage heater here, if you get instant water heater, probably not so bad, but if toilet window got fan ish better to vent out any gases.

What you mean by maintenance? For the gas piping or the gas heater? I keep reading gas heater need frequent servicing or checks, but nowhere i see got such service. All the service is only when the heater is spoilt.

I buying resale and keeping the existing gas heater. Dunno how to check if there'll be issues anot.

Every year pls ask City Gas or some other gas heater person come in just to do checks

I never have gas storage heater/instant heater before, but basically everytime the water heater got to heat water, it starts a gas fire.

Just by logical guess, I think ish check gas piping and venting. pressure of gas coming in & going out, whether fire ish burning efficiently, any blockage of vents, if got any soot also clear.

Can just call them up and say want check/service ah? I see see a few websites, the number there is for fixing one. I will try call them up when im gonna move in that time.

Just curious at the gas heater owners how they maintain their unit.

What is the main feature
Mainly cost of replacement. Give that city gas is the only (or one of the few?) supplier , a replacement heater will cost 1k-1.5k. If you have the one with control panel , just replacement that alone is 500. Might as well get a storage heater at 500 and get it over and done with (avoid ariston)
Gas heater breaks down btw 3-5 years
For storage , mine was down in year 10.
Decided to get a AOsmith for my next storage heater with micro pump just to see if it can last 10 years or not .

Whether is gas or electric, both need to maintain for storage heaters.

I deal with boilers technically, from my pov the storage boilers have more points to fail. I really don't think there's any cost saving or much purpose in Singapore. And taking alot of space. Alot of storage heaters also seems to be vertically designed, should be not as efficient. :(

If you intend to have hot water out of your other outlets like basins, bidet, etc. You can expect the gaskets or washers to wear off even faster. :(

Gas leak part I'm not worried. There should be a safety and you can just replace the connection or hose. :o

If it's instant heater, I think take electric should be better. The heating element not active so safer. I don't know how instant gas heaters work, must see the schematic but I suspect the ignition may have corrosion and conduction maybe slower or unstable. :(
