i read that some 3090 with the 12pin also caught fire
2022 then start with 4090 the new connections~
u read salah or remember wrongly ba~

5080/5070/4080/4070 below all no issues as the power consumption not as high as the 4090/5090

There are reported user issues about the 12VHPWR Cable melting/burning .

https://chatgpt.com/c/689b308f-97f4-8330-980c-5b0585fb0e19

Why it happens

  1. Partial or loose insertion
    • The 12VHPWR connector needs to be fully seated until the latch clicks.
    • Even a 0.5 mm gap can cause:
      • Higher electrical resistance at the contact
      • Localized heating
      • Melting of plastic before the metal pins fail
    • NVIDIA’s internal investigation showed many failures were due to incomplete insertion.
  2. High current in a compact design
    • 12VHPWR supports up to 600 W over just 16 pins (12 power + 4 sense).
    • At these loads, even tiny resistance increases cause large heat buildup.
    • Example: a 0.1 Ω contact at 30 A → 90 W of heat in that tiny area.
  3. Cable bending near the plug
    • If the cable is bent sharply (especially <35 mm from the connector), it can:
      • Tilt the plug, slightly lifting pins.
      • Cause uneven contact and arcing.
    • This is why NVIDIA and PCI-SIG recommend no sharp bends within 3–4 cm.
  4. Manufacturing variance
    • Some early adapters/cables had weaker spring contacts.
    • Tolerances in plug/socket alignment made proper insertion harder.
    • Cheaper third-party cables sometimes use lower-quality materials.

What’s been done to fix it

  • 12V-2x6 Standard (PCIe CEM 5.1)
    • New revision of 12VHPWR with improved tolerance, stronger retention, and more visible seating.
    • Backwards-compatible, but safer.
  • Better cable designs
    • Brands like CableMod, Corsair, and Seasonic use:
      • Thicker wires
      • Right-angle connectors (to reduce bending stress)
      • Clearer click/lock feedback
  • GPU port relocation
    • Some new GPUs position the connector so cables don’t have to bend tightly inside the case.
While the 12vhpwr adapters is a problem, that's not what happened to that 5090. It's a part on the board that caught fire, can happen to any GPU with a manufacturer defect

Carousell got, but generally 40 series is overpriced right now, got ppl selling 4070 for 600+, 4070ti super for 1k, even though 5070 is already 760 and 5070ti is 1100. Unless you find a good deal, can't really recommend

How come ah? I didn't monitor last time la so you mean there was a period of time no gpu on sale out there before 50 series? Literally a dought?
Nvidia stop production of 40xx cards before launch 50xx cards. Now the market left will be ex-stock of 40xx cards(maybe in other countries)
Even u can find one, the price will be much higher than 50xx cards now. WIll u buy?
