It is time for me to get fit again! I am going to be working in tanjong pagar area. Any recommendation which gym I should go and enlist myself as its members?
What are the marketing gimmicks from the gym that I should avoid?

If you are talking about commercial gym. CBD has quite a few, true fitness is walking distance at China Square and Chevron or you can hop on a short bus ride to harbour front. Pure fitness(most expensive) is at Asia Square tower 1 and Fitness first is at Capital Tower.

As for marketing gimmicks i am not sure, for me i just signed up for True fitness as it is the cheapest as I am only at the gym to use the weight.

There's also California Fitness around Republic Plaza area (but it's nearer to Raffles Place MRT than Tanjong Pagar). I think price is around $50-$60+/month (depends on how u negotiate and how long u sign up for)

Other than the Globogyms, there are a few other gyms to consider around Tg Pagar:
The Pit
Gold's Gym
Genesis

Do you exercise early in the morning?
Or after work?

I tend to get sleepy and lethargic after morning exercises. Do I have to reduce my training's intensity? Any other suggestion?
Or should I opt for the after working hours exercises?

In the morning works best for me, gym not so crowded and gets me more awake for the day :)

Why don't you give it a try: 1 week morning workouts and the next week after work workouts and see how u find them.

I am most energetic after workout during lunch hour.

Don't blame on the workout. Could be your diet.

I do feel energetic after workout. However that phase does not last long and decreases exponentially when it reaches 1030am ++

hi guys

newbie to forum but not to gyms in Sg or lifting

i cheked out Pure's new gym in Asia Square the other day and it is obscenely good - everything there plus a cage , 3 bags, 2 eleiko olympic lifting platforms , a 35m indoor track and sleds, trx , rip60. plus all usual stuff. its about 200 per month for this plus orchard road branch but you have to also pay a 200 membership fee

did a one-off trial at Genesis on Tras Street a few months back it was insanely tough workout , the dumbells there are with v v thick handles about 3 inches in diameter,if you can handle say a 90lb dumbell on the bench press this will translate to about 40% on the thick handle db's. NO joke!!! they had me doing rope tobatas and all sets/reps are cadence ie 1 second on the effort, 3 seconds on the negative portion. Killer. Its all PT there though, not bad about 400 per month for 2 workouts per week. No decent changing room at all though.

Fitness First in capital Tower is THE most overcrowded gym in Singapore at lunch time. Its insane! No idea what the member ship is although theyre doing a drive now round Sing i think 154 sgd for 4 months for all clubs.

there is another gym down amoy street- looks pretty hardcore and yes someone mentioned the Pit which is small, hardcore and has tyre flipping out back.

I am a member of TF but quitting cos no db heavier than 100 lb and i dont really like the continual PT sales pitch. I did the PT at GWC branch , it was very good indeed but so expensive 2300 for 20 and after i didnt wanna renew the PT stopped talking to me . Anyway TF is 123sgd per month all gyms but the nearest to CBD is in basement of China Square and its cramped and crowded and the changing rooms are pretty gross. Suntec is best by far but there is a lot of improper gym etiquette eg leaving db's lying around or leaving 10 plates on the leg press and not putting them back.

Hope this helps. Keep on lifting in the free world!

TF got 1 branch in Chevron House. But also quite crowded at lunch and after work.

Source: I was ex-TF member.

my issue with China Square is mainly the changing rooms being so small- equipment wise its not an issue ref queuing for machines etc etc. GWC is the busiest in that respect...was at Suntec last night, always busy there but there's so much space that there is always something to use...

ref personal training , yeh i had phonecalls and stuff- im ang moh though and some people assume we all have money to blow on PT lol- not me!:) 2.3k sgd i think it was...lost 5 kg and improved my squat by a plate each side even though all we ever did was functional training, no weights. However- the way they stack their PT sessions ie 6pm-7pm/ 7pm-8pm means there is no transition time between customers, sometimes they overrun or dont have time to prepare for next class etc etc.

My membership is done soon so although i like the facilities they have, Pure is far superior.

wa ur TF membership a tad expensive huh?

I got my membership 2 years back and initially they offered a 120per month package. Back then i still schooling then bargain down the price, they relented and gave the "Expat" package at 85 per month but only at GWC. These businesses are so shady...

if you nv haggle, i think they will chop ur carrot.

This actually sounds decent. Did it seem crowded?

china sqaure changing room is ridiculously small...just waiting for people to finish and rubbing shoulder to shoulder...
pure seems superior but so is the price...200 per month for 2 branches seems high-end...

tbh, i have never seen a gym as well equipped as Pure, in UK, Asia or USA and thats why i will join because it has about 4 or 5 subsections where there is so much stuff to do....it didn't seem crowded, apparently the new big one has 1200 members, of which 500 are lunchtime weekday users but not every day, apparently on weekends its empty, the one on orchard road which i visited was empty-ish on a saturday afternoon.

i hear what youre saying monk. and the showers were pretty mouldy.

i think 123 a month for TF i was paying is good value considering all gyms in SG, but i would prefer to get a discount and remove 2 of the gyms ie China Sq and Harbourfront as I only used them once and didnt go back there. I understand the Suntec branch is relocating early next year but that is hush hush apparently... Tampines TF was totally empty when i checked it out one Sunday.
